I've taken quite a liking to Arch recently, there's a fair bit of involved setup (Which I actually enjoy, for some reason), but selectively building up a system is great.

Used to be a huge fan of OpenSUSE, but, after getting into Arch this year, I can't go back. It runs great on everything from my desktop to my Raspberry Pi, and it's got a great wiki & community around it.

Not happy with how Mark/Canonical are taking Ubuntu so I am not using it anymore out of principle. Recent Fedora is also really nice but I am too comfortable on a Debian system to make the switch.

I would have placed a vote on RHEL for server use but I voted Fedora as it's what I use personally.

Just a suggestion, but could people explain why they prefer their choice of distribution? I only ask because I have a spare machine lying around and am going to start messing around with Linux, so it would be good to hear why each person went for the distribution that they did.

My vote for the moment is Ubuntu, due to its easy setup. But that's because I haven't completely dived in to Linux yet so I just use it to test things.

I don't know, to be honest. This last week was spent trying to install a decent, modern distribution in my laptop and so far I have been unsucessful.

Still use Debian on my servers for stability, but still prefer Arch overall.   Mostly because I don't have to rely on it, if it were my main OS I'd probably pick Debian there as well.  Fun to work with though.  (When it works.)

You get the awesome compatibility of Ubuntu 12.04 in a much lighter package with an amazing UI. If Linux didn't have driver issues with my switchable graphics setup I'd have switched over from Windows 7 long ago. I used it at my work computer and it's just a joy to work with, especially once you start to know the keyboard shortcuts.

Ubuntu 12.04 (with Unity + Gnome panel for task switching) at the moment. Though depending on the state Compiz is released in 14.04, might be switching to one of its forks.

Mint for me, atm. I still love Debian as a primary OS. It works very well and is a solid, stable distro.

Only distro I've ever had installed out of a WHOLE LOT of them, that some update hasn't totally screwed the OS up!

 

Don't know how many times I've had some form of Ubuntu installed that an update totally foobarred that OS. Will NEVER use that bloatware again!!
