Surface 2 update ruined my tablet

Recommended Posts

So I had the annoying Bitlocker problem that was making me have to enter my Recovery Key whenever I rebooted my Surface 2 (which was quite often given how frequently it locks up) so today when I heard an update to fix it was out I was eager to get it installed.

I installed the update and when it rebooted I get this. It never stops, and there's nothing I can do.

First advise I could think of giving, any way to warranty return it? (As a Microsoft update caused it? )

Given the issues that you've been having, I would serious consider exchanging it for a new device. There is absolutely no reason that properly functioning hardware running Windows 8 would BSOD frequently and then fail to recover, and now this additional issue.

Then the MS site recommends returning it.

Surface is stuck on the Surface startup logo

If your Surface is stuck on the Surface startup logo, turn off Surface and then turn it back on:

Step 1: Press the power button and hold it down for 10 seconds.
This ensures that Surface shuts down instead of just going to sleep. Step 2: Next, press the power button to turn Surface back on.

If shutting down Surface and turning it back on doesn't help, your Surface needs service. Request service at the Surface Online Service Centerexternal.png.

I don't have a USB A-Male to A-Male cable :\

Trying this atm, downloading the recovery image from Softpedia:

Cool, and I hope you find a fix :) but in all honesty dude, they're pennies maybe a couple of quid/dollars/ etc, on amazon and ebay

you only need it to work to get the files (if it'll work) and then take it from there :)

I think, if you can usb it to your computer and explorer sees the files

Unless it's changed from the original Surface, you cannot hooked it up to a PC and get the files via USB, doesn't work like that like Android and iOS do.  That and the drive is bitlock encrypted which adds even more fun to it.  I'd say at this point, it's done unless the recovery he's trying works.

ouch...

Well I wish him luck anyways, he might have family pics or something he wants recovered

(I should back up my stuff, but haven't gotten round to it neither)

I don't keep anything on my Surface Pro or laptop I don't have one my server (simply because I have the server) which I have CrashPlan finally running to backup anything I can never get again. If I need to be mobile with stuff I'll use Skydrive.

I know there used to be Windows Transfer Cables for Windows Easy Transfer but the OS had to be running on both PC's.

Although I have dropbox, I usually keep stuff on hard drives, then just store them labelled (admittedly I haven't done so for a while now)

But lets keep it to OP good sir :), he needs help with his surface, and possible ways to get his files off of it before he RMA's it. :)

<no disrespect intended>

It tries to boot from the USB with the recovery image (which is for Windows RT 8, they seemed to remove the option to create a recovery image in 8.1) and starts to load from it, after a couple of minutes of loading from the USB drive I get a corrupted Blue Screen and it reboots, doing the Surface screen flash and repeat again.
