Trouble installing games from disc

Recommended Posts

Was hoping to get some input from other Xbox One users...

My brother bought a game today (Just Dance 2014) and put it in the Xbox and tried to start the installation. When the dialog to install a game update appeared, it went away quickly and the game said "Installation stopped" and couldn't be started.

He turned the Xbox One off completely (holding down the button on the console) and restarted. He was able to start the installation again, and was able to start downloading the game update. At some point he turned the console off (standby mode). When he came back later, installation was stuck at 20%.

So a couple questions:
1. When a game has an update to install before installing disc, should the console be left on the entire time? (I've been able to download a full game from the store in standby but I've never tried with a disc)
2. Is there a way to install/start the game without downloading the update so you can just play the game faster? (they were hoping to let some young family members play quickly, and bought the game just for that)

Has anyone else had similar difficulties installing games? Seems like there can be some improvements made to the game installation procedures

Yeah, the install progress bar is just not informative enough.

That one bar combines the progress of any downloads and the actual install, so you don't know where its at in the process.  Also, sometimes it seems like it has just stalled out, when in fact it is still progressing.  They need to give more feedback during the process.

As far as your issue, do you know how long he was away before coming back to his X1?  Its possible that it was actually still going through the process and was just at 20%.  I have noticed that your download speed when in standby can get cut a lot sometimes.  The update could have been pretty big.  Several launch titles got big updates soon after launch.

There is no way to skip the game updates, so they have to finish.  I did not try shutting off my system when I installed the two retail games I have, but the process went as expected.  They both had an update and it did that followed by the install.  They didn't fail during that and I had just left the X1 running, not in standby.

Another possibility is that there may be an issue with actually installing a game during standby.  Maybe its forced to stop after downloading the game update until the system is powered back on to do the actual install. Maybe someone else can chime in with hands on experiences.

Disconnect the Xbox One from your internet network (Wired or Wireless), Install the game, play a game, turn off Xbox One and connect to internet again, Start Xbox One.

Hopefully this fixes your issue.

That's a great idea. I didn't know that it would allow you to play a game without getting the update, but I guess if it can't check for updates, it doesn't know

Its just VERY slow. Fortunately games like Son of Rome let you play with as little as three percent, though with reduced graphics. I don't think there's anything wrong with your X1, just like trooper said its very slow and not informative. It kinda reminds me of the stress of loading cassette games on the C64 thirty years ago.
