Great list. Of course most of my would-be contributions are already added but I think I may still have a program or two that might come in handy.

Extraction:

ExtractNow - http://www.extractnow.com

This program can extract .rar files as well as .zips and plenty of other extensions. Worth a look.

Video:

DivX Player - http://www.divx.com

You have the codecs on the list but not the actual player. I may be missing something but the DivX player is one of the stablest players out there and does what it's supposed to do - play divx files.

3d Graphics:

Terragen - http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

Also the link for Maya Learning Edition seems to be invalid. This one goes to the right page:

so far everything here is good, im going to bed but once i wakeup ill do my best to bring some new programs not mentioned into the list and ask a few questions

1-can we somehow add a description link to each program? might be asking to much

2-some kinda trusted program checkmark so we know if others trust it just because its free doesnt mean its good or will kill your system

3-brain shut off, talk to you all later

I use KeePass to store all my passwords, it rocks...

KeePass is a free/open-source password manager or safe which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. So you only have to remember one single master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).

PopTray started as a little POP3 mail checker I wrote, because I couldn't find a freeware program that had all the features I wanted. Since then, new features have been added by request. After years of refinement PopTray 3.0 has now become a full-featured, customizable, e-mail notifier, but keeping it's ease of use.

Please choose the best category for this one:

Highly specialized perhaps, but the tried and tested Linguist's Shoebox has been open-sourced as Toolbox:

http://www.sil.org/computing/toolbox/

It's useful for anyone working with poorly documented languages. Likewise, it can be a good ethnographer's database.

would you all recommend any of the free anti-virus software?

1422030

Im not asking for people to ask for permission, its just a pm to keep track of people using this list.

as a fact I can ask for permission, yes, is a bunch of links, but compiled links, some of them were given by the users, others were searched by me, but thats not the point

btw, the people contributing this list are contributing by themselves knowing that their entries will be added  ;)

1424735

and a pretty dammed decent action on the mods part dontcha think, its that what makes neowin, neowin :woot:

i saw this thread about skype, be careful with it :)

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,121...e=flat#12114307

585260131

If you use it for speaking and chatting to your online buddys it will never be able to overcharge or infact charge your card for payment. The credit card would be required for the offline calls facilty but the program works perfectly fine without it.

Skype is pretty darned good.

as my friend allan told me, cachemanxp is garbage, actually any memory-freeing application is pointless as windows takes care of this job fairly well

585289216

Indeed. Cacheman (and similar programs) was useful in the windows 9x era. But the NT (NT, 2k, XP and 2k3) plataform manages the memory very well on its own.

    • I totally disagree. Very little good comes out of governments all around the world manipulating everything they can and usually the people are not the benefactors. What you say about being restricted and expensive sounds almost like the arguments against firearms and why banning them will protect people as if making something illegal somehow will prevent the criminals from having and using them. AI being far less mainstream could simply mean the average person will not benefit, but "big brother" and the corporations will benefit, which is almost for sure NOT a good thing.
    • I do apologize to the author Mr. Sen for my rude comment, questioning his knowledge of the subject. It is I whom lacked knowledge of the subject. Sorry!

    • "connect with audiences" is the most obvious corporate speak you can think of. I only bought Need for Speed from EA because it was the only racing game with cops in existence and I dig that. Now that they killed off NFS franchise, I have nothing to spend money on. EA is officially dead for me, just like Ubisoft which I've been boycotting for some 20 years now...
