You know what could've made for an interesting plot, and could have differentiated VII from the, "Good guy rebels," plot of the original trilogy more?  Show the New Republic doing something controversial.  I'm not saying have endless senate hearings like they did in the prequels, but just have them do something that could have different sides forming opinions on whether or not it was the right thing to do.  Because, it seems to me that Lucas originally intended for the sequel trilogy to really show how the idea of, "The Hero Rebellion VS. The Evil Empire," isn't so black and white, because real life doesn't work that way.  Unfortunately, gray areas exist with almost everything all the time.  Instead, all we get is a rebellion after the rebellion was already won in Episode VI backed by a New Republic we don't see at all.
