New PS4 update to add SHARE enhancements and HDCP Off

Big new firmware update due in the coming weeks ? find out what?s included

Here at PlayStation, we listen closely to your comments and requests, which are weighted heavily when looking at the future of our platforms. Since PlayStation 4 launched, we?ve heard a lot of great feedback from you about what you like with the platform and what you?d like to see us work on.

I?m happy to report that, as a direct result of your feedback, we?ll soon be bringing some of your most-requested features to PS4 with a system software update in the upcoming weeks. These features and additions will help make your PS4 even more socially connected by further enabling you to customise your most epic gaming moments and granting even more options to show them to your friends.

This upcoming update will add a rich video editor with a simple tool to personalise your video clips, and you?ll also be able to export to and save the videos and screenshots you create by pressing the SHARE button to a USB drive. In addition, this update will add an HDCP off option for capturing gameplay via HDMI, a feature we?ve previously said would come after launch.

We recognise that some gamers want to record and share longer clips of their gameplay sessions, and we?re excited to deliver this option with PS4. There?s a lot more coming in this update as well, so stay tuned for more ? there will be plenty in the update to excite everyone.

As part of a separate system software update in the future, we have been working with our partners at Twitch and Ustream, and will also be adding the ability for Twitch broadcasts to be archived ? another highly requested feature among PS4 fans who are taking advantage of the SHARE button features. These broadcasts will be also provided with a higher resolution of 720p, so PS4 fans can enjoy live broadcasts with clearer images. We?ll have more to come on these updates and more in the coming weeks.

Great, sounds a like a very nice set of updates.

Looks like they are going to match MS in areas like video editing tools and improving video streaming quality, which is great news.

Being able to save my game clips to usb is also a big deal to me. It will be much easier then the current options on the ps4 for me. I just wish they would offer full usb storage support, but maybe that will come later.

The hdcp thing is very much welcome news for many online casters, so that will be nice.

I wonder what else will make it in this update?

And adding the archiving. This is great news. The PS4 keeps getting better and better.

i guess im the only one that doesnt give a hoot about social features. is this really Sony's priority? Not the other myriad of things that users wanted when the PS4 launched?

Yep, Sony have lagged behind badly in updates compared to Xbox One and even with this 'Major' update we see no sign of the myriad of other features promised when they announced the console that quietly skipped launch :/

What happened to suspend mode, controller share, trial *any* game, etc etc they really under delivered so far.

I was going to ask what features, but you named some of them.  I thought suspend mode was in the first update what you had to download for the blu-ray playback?

Nope suspend mode, controller share and other of the major features they announced over a year ago are nowhere to be seen yet. Not even talking about stuff that wasn't mentioned but people took for granted would be there like friend activity notifications, dlna support etc but major stuff they announced would definitely be there and was selling points of the console are still missing.

Game streaming is in closed beta so at least they have announced something on that, but it is pretty bare still compared to what they announced.

Not only that but they haven't released a single new feature post launch except for maybe headset support that should have been there to begin with. All the while Microsoft have been hammering out the updates providing new user facing features all the time.

I think Sony got a bit big headed on the consumer goodwill following the xbox announcement because they have appear to have rested on their laurels a bit. I know this v1.7 is in the pipeline but unless they have some major things they have not mentioned yet this is a pretty minor update.

Such as? Because here are the last 2 updates for X1 and all of them were part of 360 OS (minus DVR which isn't applicable obv):

  • Get to your friends list faster.
  • Party chat will be turned on by default.
  • Chat with friends playing different games.
  • We?re adding an ?Invite friends to game? option to your multiplayer titles moving forward
  • We?re adding ?Recent Players.?
  • Game and app saves and updates.
  • Friends improvements.
  • Kinect voice and motion improvements
  • Improved GameDVR video quality

Both have been slow to add anything new (if at all), no doubt MS are moving faster about it though which is to be expected.

Delivering on promises, good.

Slow and steady wins the race, lol.

I hope youtube support is coming soon as well!

I think its mostly up to YouTube to create the app to use on the PS4, but im not sure. It really should have it by now.

------

Also suspend mode? Is that like sleep mode which the PS4 already has? or suspend/pause a game while tabbing out to the main menu like it already has?

Game streaming; You can already live-stream your gameplay.

Controller Share? Not sure if you mean the share button on the controller which gives you social/sharing options or something to do with the controller lights and eye controller detection? But these both work.

Friend activity notifications? Like when a friend logs on and it shows a notification or like when you click there profile and it has their recent history notifications? They work for me.

Trial 'Any' Game was supposed to be a Xbox One feature, you download a game and are able to play like 15 mins of it before it asked you to buy it. I think they got rid of it when they got rid of the always-online DRM policies. Don't think Sony had a similar feature.

---

I personally think the PS4 just needs DLNA app where I can stream my music and movies from my PC to it, YouTube app, 3D Blu-ray support, UI Customization (themes, folders, etc) and probably external HDD support (But with DLNA probably wont use it)

Do we really need to bring MS' update list in this thread?

As far what new features are out on both consoles, I would say Twitch streaming and gamedvr functions are the biggest.

Yeah, I don't mind them taking their time as long as they communicate with us about what they have in mind.

I believe he is talking about game resume from sleep. That is where you can shut off your console, come back to it, and the game is still paused where you left off. It was a feature off by default on the X1 and listed as beta until the last patch, which took away the tag and turned it on by default.

I'm still on the fence if I even like that feature though.

Controller Share? Not sure if you mean the share button on the controller which gives you social/sharing options or something to do with the controller lights and eye controller detection? But these both work.

Maybe he doesn't realize you need the ps4 eye in order for the detection features to work.

DLNA and external storage support are my current favorites to get. I would also like to see apps in general improve as I still run into crashes and random kicks back to the home screen. Also, it would be nice if they update their own music and video apps to play local media or media stored on external storage.

No what I mean by controller share is there was a function whereby you could invite a friend to watch your game (NOT the current streaming feature, a 1-1 stream) and then you could have a friend take over "controller share" as if they were sat on the couch next to you.

I'm not sure I would even use it but they made a big thing of it when they announced the console.

Yeah but they are all user facing features so they are constantly adding stuff which enhances the user experience (even if they were on the 360).

Sony haven't added anything which makes a difference the user except maybe headset support so far.

For a console thats so so many units, i've only seen literally 2 uses of the share button across all of my social media. Both from the same guy on FIFA. Waste of a button

The friends you have in your social media circle are indicative of the whole web? Just saying.... :/

Anyway, what else would they do with the button? Every dualshock has two anyway, select/start.

Personally I am just waiting for external HDD support.  My TV has full dlna/youtube/netflix/etc so no need for it on my PS4.  The only thing I'd like to see is the ability to use an external HDD for game installs.   Other than that.. I am 100% perfectly happy with my PS4.

im just so tired of social media and "sharing" everything. i think Sony made a huge mistake w/ the Share button. Perhaps just b/c im older i dont see the value of watching someone else play the game over the internet. I dont see the value of recording my games so i can link them to facebook. i just want to play the game on my system. I just dont know why social everything has to be Sony's top priority.

I am totally with you on this.   I like being to record my videos but i dont really want to be posting them on youtube or streaming them in twitch for that matter.  Also i dont really get watching 10 second clips of someone getting lucky and falling off a building on cod and shooting 2 people in the head.  Video tutorials i get but thats not what the share button is for.

Hopefully we see more updates from sony before E3.  I would say MS is winning pretty big in the update department and although yeah alot of it is stuff the 360 had already the ps4 has stuff it needs too that the ps3 could do already that has yet to be added.

What about recording for yourself, especially now that you can put it onto USB storage and completely skip social media? I just don't see how your lack of social care can equal a huge mistake considering the amount of people using YouTube/Facebook/Twitter/Twitch to post gaming videos.

People have gone about using expensive capture devices for years, I don't know how it's a negative Sony giving native support so capture devices can be skipped (I know the pros will still prefer them, hence HDCP removal being needed). Isn't that simply a pro for those who like recording, those who don't... don't use it? It's in no way hindering anyone's ability to just play a game.

Of course not, but i've some pretty die hard PS fans on there, and for them to not even use it, was a surprise to me

you have a point, AB - i just dont care for the social this and that. i think Sony's priorities need to be different.

MS showed to them last generation that you need to win over the gamers on the social side to get them to prioritize your console as the go to console for MP games. I think launching as the games machine first before media set the tone for priority, Sony are just slower on the software side, they're never going to churn out updates as quick as MS so I don't think it's really a matter of priority. Just what is easier to patch first. By all means the Twitch update is to counter the XB1's twitch effort, but overall it really is down to Sony being slower at working with software.

The "juicier" updates will always be the most time consuming for them - See the PS3 XMB for example.

Of course not, but i've some pretty die hard PS fans on there, and for them to not even use it, was a surprise to me

Doesn't really matter if you're a hardcore PS fan, it's simply down to whether or not you use social media/care for it/want to record. I don't use it much and you know me

Do we really need to bring MS' update list in this thread?

I didn't bring it up, but I am challenging his post for incorrect info.

New to X1 yes, but not new to gaming. There is nothing special about either consoles updates so far. Just playing catch up to what we already had.

Really? I'm the opposite I'm actually getting quite tired of it

Says who? You can use it for whatever reason you like. Walkthroughs, trophy guides, make a mini series with your favourite game and start a YT channel. Possibilities are endless.

I am baffled as to how you keep continually completely missing the point?

Firstly, what was incorrect about my post?

Secondly, I never said they were new to gaming. I said they were new features pushed to the xbox one. My point being that Microsoft are pushing out updates to the xbox one that make a difference to the user experience ON THAT CONSOLE, in comparison to Sony who have pushed out absolutely nothing of substance so far, from a users functionality perspective nothing has changed bar headset support.

    • Ah. La Fontana De Incontinentia ! Bella ! Bella !
    • Hi everyone, I'm planning a small network upgrade and was wondering how others prepare their networks for future needs. Do you usually invest in higher-speed switches and better cabling from the start, or do you upgrade only when necessary? I'd be interested in hearing what has worked well for you and any lessons you've learned over time. Thanks!
