I'm curious if anyone knows why GameSpy is shutting down all of it's multiplier services that effect games from PC, console, cell phone apps and more?

It seems several companies were caught off guard, and you would think they have enough business.

Since its acquisition by freemium game publisher Glu Mobile, GameSpy has been shutting down multiplayer servers, according to reports from frustrated gamers and developers.

According to Rebellion, maker of Sniper Elite, the decision was made without its input and it has little means of rectifying the situation. "We have been talking to [Glu Mobile/GameSpy] since to try and get the servers turned back on," said the developer in an official statement. "We have been informed that in order to do so would cost us tens of thousands of pounds a year - far in excess of how much we were paying previously." So the servers will stay off.

From the what I've found out so far, the tech was purchased Game Spy which no longer existed (it was absorbed by IGB), the tech was bought out by a company called Glu Mobile.

(Edit) Was typing before Hum posted.

So there business strategy was to get a tech that had heavy reliance and try to jack up the cost and backfired.

I'm going to keep an eye out for any mobile apps with Glu and avoid them.

Tens of thousands of pounds for servers that barely get any traffic? Hell no! Talk about overstating the cost.

This is technically semi-false.  The only ones that matter would be if GameSpy is the one and only master server attached to the game for clients and servers.  Its not the case on at least some.  Specifically Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy.  Raven Software hosts the official master servers for these locally.  The GameSpy one is just an alternate master for use outside of ingame services.

Gamespy...as heslo said, how times change. Never really understood the point of Gamespy, but if the name will disappear must say in a way will miss it. We are all getting old and nothing lasts forever. But if people say Glu took over i'm not surprised...Glu are the worst freemium offenders in the world. They make Gameloft, King, and the bleakest reaches of the EA realm look saintly.
