RAM fails memtest, but only when testing all sticks

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to diagnose a friend's PC and have hit a roadblock. When I tested his RAM with memtest86+, I got errors when all four sticks were in his system and also when they were all in another known-good system.

When I've tested the sticks individually or in pairs, I haven't seen a single error even after multiple passes.

It may be worth noting that the errors I've seen were only single errors (not the usual torrent of errors I see from bad RAM) and they happened either very late in the pass or into the second pass.

The RAM is a 16GB kit of Mushkin PC3-12800 (4x4GB).

Is this a known type of issue or am I going down the wrong path chasing false positive errors?

So you see one or two errors in a whole pass (or two)? I'd disregard, that's within a margin of error.

Likely you'd want to increase the voltage by one step to keep them up to spec.

Having said that, it doesn't sound like RAM's your issue.

Hello,

Is the SPD data from each memory module identical?  You can look at it using a program like CPU-Z or HWiNFO32.

I am wondering if one of the sticks may have a memory die (one of the actual DRAM chips) which is on the margin of being out of spec with respect to holding bits as the voltage recommended in the SPD data.  Upping the voltage, as Raa suggested, might fix it.

In either case (SPD mismatch, which means the matched set really isn't a matched set, or failure to work at spec'ed SPD), I would suggest contacting Mushkin and RMA'ing the set.

    • I purchased, and that key is also not working. Well, it worked now.
    • Hello, In the past, I have purchased directly from Amazon, BestBuy, MicroCenter, Microsoft, and Newegg.  When purchasing, I have made sure the seller was either the store in question (not a third-party in their marketplace) or Microsoft. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Right. And permission denied means it's still there, now just need to bypass authentication !!
