Too much RAM used up in Windows 8.1

Has anyone noticed that his RAM is running at 20307MHz??? (My friend, please SELL ME THAT COMPUTER FROM THE FUTURE)

I would check for BIOS/UEFI firmware updates from the OEM.

 

And second, a clean install of Windows 8.1 and updated drivers. A lot of work? Yes, but that kind of behaviour is not normal.

My usage went up. I had a 2gb machine, windows 8.1 x64  used  around 700 mb. on a 16gb laptop, it uses 2.5 gb :wacko:

What does Resource Monitor say? It provides a breakdown of what is using memory.



Here's my system currently, the standby value shows data the system is caching in memory in case it's needed again (Stuff like binaries an app loaded that haven't changed on disk, etc.)

I have 28GB Cached, 3.3 GB in use, and 53 MB hardware reserved.

I see nothing wrong. I am also guessing Intel GPU (100 MB reserved by hardware) and a recent reboot (cache is very small).

Ever hear the phrase "everything is relative" ?   3.3GB isnt much to someone who has 32GB of RAM.  Proportionally, it would be like you having 13GB being used by nothing.  That would cause you concern.  ;)

That Bitdefender needs to go. Any security software runs on top of the OS. Windows defender is embedded. Also what is in your startup Tab in Task Manager? I noticed you have allot of unnecessary processes.

Windows Defender runs just the same as any application does, as a service within Windows and likely with some type of driver loading that gives it a lower level access to scanning. This is no different then BitDefender or any other Anti-virus worth it's weight.

 

Windows Defender is no more "embedded" then any other application/service running on the OS.

 

So it's not that causing the problem, maybe he needs to start disabling devices in device manager one by one.

Yes and it uses 16MB of RAM vs. 100+ MB of RAM that Bitdefender uses. Oh and I'm using Windows 8.1. Windows Defender for Windows 8.1 is just more efficient on memory. And it's engine doesn't slow your PC down.

MsMPEng.exe uses 48MB of ram right off the bat with no definition file loaded. 52MB after loading the definition file. Not sure what BitDefender uses because I don't use it. But Windows Defender isn't using only 16MB of ram..

Wow guys I really appreciate the activity here.

Let me answer some questions then write what I've done.

 

First I do have hybrid graphics, but Nvidia 735m and Intel 4400 (not ATI).

I realize reinstalling windows will most likely fix this, but I'm trying to find an easier solution..

Uhh I did disable many of the devices in the manager, those whose name I could recognize (speaker, mic etc), but I left a lot enabled cause they were too much. I restarted and nothing's changed. I can disable everything though if it might fix it.

Westren Digital Backup Drive you have? WDBoost.exe process seems to indicate it, I once read it having issue detailed under following blog by one Valve employee.

For Bitdefender and vsserv (which is Bitdefender related), I uninstalled it, restarted, no change.. So I installed it again.

 

I don't have a Western Digital device or backup, could this be related to my internal harddisk?

 

 

 

So, for what I've done so far:

 

I killed every killable process in Task Manager that doesn't give a warning about Windows crashing, 3 GBs were still used up. I assume this could mean it's not a software problem?

I then tried to apply a solution I found online; ran Windows in Safe Mode with Networking, and the RAM was actually freed up.

I used Driver Viewer to get a list of drivers that loaded, and compared it with the drivers loading in a normal boot. The list was too large, so I removed all Microsoft based drivers from the list, hoping it isn't a Windows bug. I ended up with a list of:

Few Nvidia related drivers

Intel Graphics related drivers

Intel Bluetooth drivers

BitDefender files

VMWare files

WDBoost driver

2 Realtek drivers

 

I installed VMWare much later after I recognized the RAM problem so it's not the problem. I uninstalled BitDefender and the drivers of Nvidia, Intel gfx and Intel bluetooth, restarted and still nothing.

 

I also realized that as soon as Windows starts the NP Pool is at 200 mbs, then keeps increasing in a short period to 2 gb.

OK, I show between 16 to 50MB, but I do have 12GB of RAM. I think it depends on what's happening.

After trying a few things I found out that uninstalling WD Boost driver fixed the non-paged pool problem. Kudos to Zlip792 for guessing the right solution!

 

However, I'm not really comfortable with the RAM usage yet.

The non-paged pool is at 207 MB (normal rate), but the general usage can get pretty high with opening some apps, and I still get "Low on memory" warnings with a bit demanding softwares.

 

An example of that is what is happening right now, I have BitDefender doing a scan now, and Firefox run with a bunch of tabs, this will take up a bit more RAM than usual yes I know but 60% of my 8 GB is too much in my opinion.

Why not update your Flash Plugin to version 13 and also see whether your Firefox is updated or not. Try new Firefox profile since its using quite a lot RAM. Upcoming Firefox 29.0.1 will have network prediction seer disabled which will make your webpages loading faster and shutting down Firefox faster, they does not manage to get it right. So they are disabling it with 29.0.1.

If you use Metro apps, do you know how to close them properly.

 

Also look at this weird problem similar to somehow yours VCAgent is consuming too much RAM etc, try disabling its service from services.msc in RUN (Win Key + R) and also from Startup in Task Manager.
