Coming Soon: New Audio Controls and Opt-In Setting to Help Improve Voice Recognition

As part of our ongoing effort to bring new features to our Xbox fans worldwide, we?ll begin rolling out more features to folks in our early access program beginning this week and we?re looking forward to their feedback before shipping the system update to all Xbox One owners in May. We hope you?ve been enjoying our most recent Xbox One system update that rolled out last week and we look forward to bringing you even more great features in the months ahead.

Feature highlights for this next phase of our early access program include a new sound mixer for snapped apps, chat volume controls when using Kinect and the option to help us improve speech recognition. You can also take this update on demand as soon as it becomes available if you?d like.

Sound Mixer for Apps with Snap and Volume Controls When Using Kinect with Chat

We?ve received great feedback from fans asking for more control over audio levels and background sound. As a result, under Settings we?ve added two new features for controlling your audio options. With the new Sound mixer, you?ll be able to control the volume levels of two apps when you?re using Snap letting you decide which app is louder. In this same section, you?ll also be able to control the volume levels when you?re using Kinect for chat.

Opt-In to Help Improve Speech Recognition

Being able to control your Xbox One with voice commands can be a magical moment and we want to continue making this great for all Xbox One owners worldwide. The more voice samples we have to input into our algorithms, the better and more responsive Xbox One can be to our fans. If you want to help us in our efforts to make voice and speech improvements for Kinect even better, you can opt-in to a speech data collection.

Under Settings, then Privacy & Online Safety, go to Customizing privacy and online safety and set Share Voice Data to Allow. This is completely optional and all voice data shared via this setting will be used for product improvement only.

Take the Next System Update When You Want

You?ll now also be able to take this next system update as soon as it?s available if you want. When this update is made available, you?ll find the option under Settings, then select System update as shown below.

As always, we?re thrilled with our fans? enthusiasm about our Xbox One system updates and we?re really excited about what?s coming in the next few months. We look forward to hearing your feedback about these latest features in our early access program and will roll them out to everyone worldwide in May.

Any chance that someone has some pull, to get me in the update?

I think Andrew tried to get me in the last one (Thanks by the way) but I must of been late accepting his friend request.

Or "Am I holding wrong" while trying to get in the preview program :-/

Nothing of interest this update but welcome the improvements regularly

Better to release little changes regularly than make people wait months! Something small can actually be big for someone, just depends on everyone's individual uses/requirements and setups.

Did you never get a message to download the preview registration app?

Via the preview forums:

Other items that we are investigating based on your feedback:

  • Various HDMI-In issues with certain set-top boxes
  • Launch to TV - as a default Xbox setting
  • Favorites - ability to reorder the list
  • OneGuide expansion - add support for more countries (e.g. Brazil, Austria, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, etc.)
  • Better Device on/off controls for IR control of devices

Please keep all of the great feedback coming

Launch to TV as a default option would be great for many families where one or two are the only tech savvy types and the rest just want to watch TV and use it more as a set-top box.

Don't know when they plan to release this May update but I'm going to guess it's late in the month, maybe between 20th and 25th, so I expect more things to make it in.

@andrew - looks like I got in from your invite... If I have the audio mix, does that mean I'm in? After I entered the code I never got any additional notices from ms

I think so. Your dashboard should be version 6.2.10938.0 / xbl_rel_1405 and you should get a message in your XBL Inbox:

Nice (Y)

Hopefully more get in and you can all spread it among yourselves

I too never got the app, I entered the code I was sent (I think from you) into xbox.com which now shows as used but I am still non beta.

Sorry man, as you know it's out of my control once I put your GT forward. Just luck of the draw. I must have put at least 10 GTs forward and only 3 have confirmed they're into the preview so far.

Each update they're probably adding more testers so you may still get in later.

This whole process is redundant compared to the old previews. Hopefully they change it and let everyone who wants to take part register their interest rather than this picking/choosing nonsense.

I hope this update brings some fixes to the Watch TV experience.

Every since this last major update in April I have been having the issue where it tells me it has lost my TV signal.

post-34384-0-93146600-1399300503.jpg

It happens at least once a day, and it seems the only way to fix it is to restart all of my components.

I have even gone through the initial TV setup twice now hoping that would fix it.

I have quadruple checked all of my connections as well, even went as far as using completely different (and brand new) HDMI cables.

Did not have this issue at all prior to the update, so I do hope it is fixed with the next update.

I think it's a known issue and they're aware of it. Sounds pretty similar to the post from the feedback forums:

That is good to hear, as just doing a Google search just to get that image I put in my post had me worried not a lot of people where experiencing it, as that was the one and only image I could find of that error.

What is interesting is a friend of mine has a very, very similar setup to me and also the same cable provider so same set top box, and he is not seeing the issue at all. Which is just odd/frustrating. I hope it is not something with my hardware somehow.

    • Windows 11 is technically Windows 10, It was going to be a Windows 10 feature update (Sun Valley) but alas, marketing had its way with it for a new version bump as opposed to yet another rolling release update and the UI design decisions made for the Windows 10 Sun Valley Update, pretty much ruined the launch of Windows 11. More about what decisions Microsoft is making at anytime rather than OS version at this point.
    • RTM is October 5, so this must be the release that software vendors could use and all.
    • 5 years old and still "work in progress"...
    • so? biggest release of all time... they could've changed it.
    • Microsoft adds new AI study and teaching tools for free to Microsoft 365 Education by Karthik Mudaliar Microsoft is expanding its footprint into the classroom with a new suite of AI-powered study and teaching tools for Microsoft 365 Education. Rather than pushing these features as premium add-ons, the company is rolling out many core features at no additional cost to existing customers. The update brings new tools such as 'Copilot Notebooks' and 'Study and Learn Agents' into Microsoft's Education suite. Copilot Notebooks is essentially an AI-powered workspace where students can ground answers with their own learning materials, similar to Google's NotebookLM. The study and learning agents would allow students to learn concepts more visually, along with interactive practices and real-time feedback. For the last few years, educational institutions have struggled to implement practical guardrails for the usage of large language models. The new tools from Microsoft are a push towards providing those guardrails natively within the apps that the students and teachers already use every day. For teachers, the new 'Unit Plans' within the dedicated 'Teach' agent would allow them to rapidly generate structured curriculum frameworks grounded in established learning science, cutting down hours of preliminary lesson planning. Microsoft is also introducing 'Learning Groups' in Assignments that would help educators automatically categorize students based on performance data. With 'Learning Zones', teachers can then tailor assignments to different comprehension levels. It should be noted that Microsoft is making Learning Zone accessible for a one-year trial across all Windows 11 devices, while quietly incentivizing school districts to upgrade their legacy hardware and lock further into the Windows ecosystem. Of course, Microsoft is doing this as part of a broader ambition. Just last year, the company made waves when it brought its 365 Copilot to the education sector for $18 a month, introducing premium tiers with standalone conversational agents. However, gating all AI features behind a per-user subscription left a massive gap of students without access to official, school-sanctioned AI tools. Now that the features are inside the base Microsoft 365 Education suite for free, the company is effectively subsidizing the AI training of its next generation of power users. Microsoft’s own data, released alongside these tools in its 2026 AI in Education Report, indicates that while over 90% of students are using AI, nearly 80% lack formal training. Lastly, Microsoft is also expanding its "Elevate for Educators" training program, developed in partnership with organizations like ISTE and ASCD. This ensures that the teachers tasked with policing and guiding this new technology actually understand how to use it themselves.
