Building a New PC

Hi All,

 

I am in the final stages of building my first PC rig in 5+ years. I will be using it for gaming, titles such as Crysis 3. 

 

I an unsure which motherboard I should get, though. Any suggestions? I wanted the ASRock Z87 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157370) but it's sold out on newegg.

I have the same H80i cooler :)

 

As for the BluRay burner, unless you use it exclusively, it is a waste of money. Just get a DVD burner for ~$20

 

All else looks good :)

Are you gonna be overclocking if not i would go for the non K version if its cheaper (non K version is ?185 compared to ?208)

 

also would an i5 not suffice?

4770k is a bit overkill for gaming. An i5 would do just fine. Save the money and buy an Samsung Pro SSD. The price difference is not that big last I checked. Other than that a very decent build. Although BluRay? :)

Do you live near a Micro Center? They have the 4770K for $270 instead of the $340 Newegg wants. In store deal only though.

What are the advantages of going for a Z97 mobo over the ASrock Z87? Looking at the specs, it looks like I get more with the ASRock z87 in terms of expansion slots and rear ports. 

 

Thanks for the heads up Enron - I am fairly close to a MicroCenter, so I'll pick one up there. I've chosen the 4770K in case games in the next year or so make more use of core tech, and for a bit of future-proofing. With this deal I will definitely go for it. 

 

Blu-Ray is for media capabilities (I don't have a television) and because the burner is only $10 more than the player.

CPUs are so far ahead of everything else, in terms of speed, that you're much better off putting more money into a GPU.

I personally would switch to an i5 and put the money towards a bigger SSD and maybe better GPU if there's enough leftover.

Worst case, the Z87 i7-4770k's won't be any more expensive once the equivalent Z97 board and i7-4790k is released, so no loss. If anything, they will probably be a bit cheaper. Don't expect massive price drops though, it probably wouldn't happen.

The issue will be that the i7-4790k won't be available straight away, it will be a another couple of months. The downside of going with Z87 is that you can't upgrade to Broadwell later if you want and with Z97 board you supposedly can.

Z87:

• slightly cheaper to purchase
• lower resale at the end
• can't upgrade later
• lower resale value

Z97:

• have to wait a couple more months for i7-4790k
• higher resale value than Z87 when you next upgrade
• upgradeable to Broadwell (next gen) CPU
• faster
• by waiting, you may be able to have a higher budget
• certain video cards may be cheaper
