batman-unlimited-101120.jpg

At this week's Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Warner Bros. have apparently spilled the beans on what seems to be the next Batman animated series following the cancellation of Beware the Batman on Cartoon Network.

The image above, taken by a fan and posted to Reddit, features a new-look Batman sporting a logo close to the one that appears on a number of Mattel's toy packages at big-box retailers (the title, Batman Unlimited, is also the name of a toy line sold at Target stores, although featuring a very different logo).

Licensing Expo is a place where this poster would be at home even if it isn't an animated series but a new toy line -- but fans have been expecting a new Batman series since the end of Beware was announced.

Obviously, DC Entertainment and Cartoon Network have had some luck with the "Unlimited" suffix, which was tacked onto Justice League in one of their most popular animated series.

Why can't we have a real life batman again? If superman pulled it, green arrow as well... c'mon DC!

We don't need no Batman teen CW drama, just no.

LOL I don't think a teen drama could be made out of batman  ! Though I think once Gotham ends in who knows how many years, it will lead up to a batman series somehow? (fingers crossed)

huh?

i've read this sentence many times, now maybe I'm too drunk, but I can't make sense of it...

I want a NEW batman series? (non animated)

I just don't know what the fascination with the chin on the mask is. They've also added it to the suit that Batman uses in the animated films. I just don't like it at all :/

Well, from a combat perspective, I guess it guards from jabs and punches?

Yeah but why add it in if it's not live-action etc? :p The comic book/original version doesn't even have it.

Maybe some sort of royalty issues? eg. they can't use the costume as exactly portrayed in the comics so as to not to tarnish the image?  Doesn't the cowl look blue?

Would be odd if that was the case. The newly animated Arkham film doesn't have the added chin. I think it's because they just want to try something new with the suit. The cowl in the comics is black though.

Yeah I guess that makes sense or perhaps they're leading into something kinda batman beyondish ? :P

I wouldn't count on that :p Batman never had a suit similar to this in any of the Batman Beyond books.

Of course, another possibility is that this is not a television series at all. The stylized Bat-symbol is one Mattel has been utilizing on its Batman packaging for some time now, along with releasing a line of action figures under the "Batman Unlimited" label, albeit with a logo based on the one currently used by DC Comics' "Batman" series. With that in mind, it's conceivable that this is an overall brand expansion for the character rather than a new foray into animation.

Bring us a punisher series instead, its better suited for TV, then again I don't know if he's DC.

Punisher is Marvel.

How is he more suited for TV? If anything, he's way more violent than Batman. Also, Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond weren't suited for tv? :p

I rather have a new version of the old animated series with Kevin Conroy doing Batman again.

Now that would be awesome! Looking forward to hearing him in Arkham Knight, he sounded pretty badass in the trailers.

no big budget effects, just a guy with guns killing guys, lots of opportunities for big arcs and lots of one time stories.

And lots of violence never stopped anyone, heck I prefer his permanent solutions to batmans sissy ways.

    • Bluesky COO warns social media regulations could destroy competition from small startups by Paul Hill Fears that increasing government control of social media risks regulatory capture by the biggest social media firms were raised again recently. Bluesky’s chief operating officer said in an interview that social media bans for children and tighter regulations for social media firms risk creating a world where there are only a few social media platforms run by companies with the deepest pockets. Regulations on social media firms have been very lax since they appeared for mainstream users in the 2000’s. This gave Meta, Snapchat, and Google time to build up their user bases and get entrenched, with Meta being the most successful. Now that Meta has succeeded, it has been attempting regulatory capture. By pushing for more regulations of social media, Meta hopes to make it more difficult for rivals to challenge it. For its part, it doesn’t need to worry about the cost of regulation because it has a lot of money to spend, whereas startups do not. Speaking to CNBC, Rose Wang, Bluesky’s chief operating officer, said: “I support the protection and the safety of youth, the question that we have then is at what cost, because essentially what I’m scared of is in the long term, we’re headed to a world where there’s about three to five platforms, and extreme heavy regulation of those platforms, and basically the whole compliance teams of these platforms are 10 times the size of our entire team. So, basically, we’re living in a world where it’s almost impossible for smaller entrants to come in and build healthier spaces. These platforms have led to a place where the bottom line is the thing that drives what they do... so I understand why governments have to step in and regulate, because the platforms have done nothing right.” She said that while she is not against regulation, there needs to be more channels between the small to mid-sized players and regulators to help protect them. She says that big tech players, on the other hand, “who we know are circumventing regulation,” need to be regulated. Essentially, the Bluesky position is one of nuance, rather than absolutes. While Bluesky’s proposal may preserve competition in the social media space, it still doesn’t address the massive privacy implications these age verification measures introduce, such as handing over sensitive identity documents to access age-gated content.
