Hello all,

I was browsing the Mac Store right now plotting my next purchase and nothing catches my eye. They have the MacBook Pro line, which have no pro features except the 15 inch with retina display. I am so sick of seeing the Intel graphics chips, it is not a premium chip anyway you try to put it.

Is there any info on when Apple may finally try to make great laptops again?

Not trying to start a flame war, but I am running on a mid-2010 MBP and I would never consider integrated Intel graphics to be any good. Intel may have improved their chip, but nothing beats dedicated NVidia or ATI graphics cards with some dedicated memory.

I looked at the bench mark comparisons and the Iris graphics is at the bottom of the list.

I guess but what are you looking to do with it? If it's "good enough" for what you do then you'd be wasting money on getting an ATI or nVidia card just cuz it's "faster".

Then again I see this option there:

So they obviously have options for you if that's what you want... :)

The 15" is their only "professional" laptop - if you need performance, that's the only option.

I personally have a 2012 15" retina. It has a 2.6GHz i7 with a 1GB 650M - and it has handled everything I've thrown at it over the past couple of years with ease!

Intel Iris Pro is more than enough for any non-gaming needs. I have a late 2013 rmbp 15" with the nvidia GPU and the only time it ever switches to nvidia is when I load a game or some random app that causes it to bug out like Java.  Integrated is even happy when churning through hundreds of RAW files in Lightroom.

What benchmarks are you looking at?  From everything I see, the Iris Pro is only about 10-15% slower than the latest mobile GPUs, but it uses a A LOT less power. Pretty fair trade-off if you ask me.  Plus it's optimized for Open CL, which is used by some design programs, which is you know, the point of getting a MBP in the first place.

Also, while Apple's products cost more.. You may see their specs less  than others same priced.. Mostly, because OSX runs more efficient.. You paying for a damn well built computer.. Some some plastic POS.

Anyone who would still pay $2,600 for a laptop is simply looking for a reason to spend more money than necessary.

This. If you're gonna spend that kind of money and you're looking for laptop with serious power, I'm sure you can find something far better.

The only sole criteria that determines worthiness of a Laptop is the graphics chip in it. Especially when it is pushing so called Retina/UHD display.

Unfortunately the laptop graphics are falling behind in terms of speed curve due to limitations of heat dissipation, space inside chassis or being purposely held back by Nvidia and AMD.

So I simply don't use laptops anymore. I use an extremely powerful megawatt guzzling Windows based desktop and a power efficient tablet (Air). Laptops are redundant.

/Strong Opinion.

Indeed ... and especially one without the fruity badge on the lid for about half the price or less!

If you are buying a mac book pro for gaming you are already making a big mistake and if you are not then its really not going to matter between a nvidia 750 and the intel video. To me unless your getting a 760 or better nvidia the intel video card is just as good as anything.

Heck for 2600 you could get a Windows notebook with an nvidia 880 in it that would handle anything at high settings.

Holy freaking crap what the hell is with that price? You can get much, much better machine with 50% of that price.

Not true at all. Some people like OSX.. Some people like to stand by their brand.. Some people could have been using Mac's for 20 years and that's all they know.. Some people might have Mac only software that's required for them to work.

Let's take a side step away from just Apple..

You can get high end gamer laptops that cost that and a lot more.. Some people might want a portable gaming machine..

If someone has a need or a want in something, it's their business and interest . Not trying to just spend money to impress.

This.

I like the design of Macs though, especially OS X.

I've ran Flight Simulator on a MacBook that had an NVidea card. Tried running with an intel, never again!

Says someone who thinks $2600 is a lot for a tool you need everyday ....

What about a $4000 gaming laptop ?  Or a $4000 Toughbook ?

Remember, everything is relative.  While you (and others) who feel $2600 is a lot - there are others who dont even look at the price as a factor in getting someone you want/need.

$4000 and I didnt go nuts

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
