Block Websites Without Blocking Everything Else

Recommended Posts

Alright,

So I am looking to block a few websites from myself. The issue is how.

I need to block these sites, with a password I can give to another person (sister). Though, I can not be locked out of any of my things. Such as, I tried an app for Chrome, which also blocked the uninstall, which is great, but this blocks the extension page, which I need access too. I added websites to my router, but if I give a password that only my sister knows, I lose access to the router as well.

So I need my access to these things, but still be 100% blocked from websites. Also, I need to do this for all my computers and devices on my network. I need to also block these sites from my 4G Data mobile connection.

I can't seem to find a solution that allows all of this to work?

Share? No, the only thing my sister has to do with this is that she will be keeping the password.

I need the websites to be blocked on 2 Windows systems, 1 OSX system, and 1 Android Phone (possibly many more devices later on).

Does OpenDNS allow me to block access to it with a password, that does not block me from anything else? And what about my mobile connectioN?

Yes OpenDNS allows you to create an account with password so you can block/unblock the websites anytime. Filters included.

For mobile connection, check these apps. Or you go to your mobile provider website and block the websites in the mobile settings..

Nice,

My only concern with that is the speed. Over the years when ever I did tests to see the best DNS for me, OpenDNS was never on the top spot. Though I suppose we are talking very minor differences.

You might try GoogleDNS... but not sure they have filter/block settings like OpenDNS does.

I have no problem with OpenDNS on my end.  I have been using this service since they started this service.

Just realized that OpenDNS requires me to enter the IP address within the router, which I could just turn off :(

I have none, why else would I do this lol

IP address is required for network filtering/blocking ... so you can block whatever the sites you want and everyone on the PCs can not visit the sites you provided in the settings...  that way you don't have to make some changes each device each time.

For example:

Parental control app on each PC that you will have to make some changes on each PC based on your family member.

or

OpenDNS: you make some changes at once, the websites are blocked on all devices available that are connected to same network based on the IP address.

And if you do not have static IP address, then you will need the updater client which sits in the tray... once you get a new IP address, the updater will send the new IP address to the server on your account for you (automatically or manually).

Get the idea?

I know how it works lol

I am just saying, now I can go into the router and clear those IPs, and then I can access those sites. So it does not really help. Now do I have that little of self control,I dunno.

So change the password on your router and ensure that only your sister has the new password, not yourself? Additionally change the internet access password that you set in the router (the one for authentication with your isp), and ensure that only your sister has that. Thus, you can not login to the router and change the DNS settings, and similarly if you try to reset the router config by using the reset button (presuming it has one) allowing you to completely reconfigure it from scratch through the default router password, you won;t be able to get it to connect to your ISP.

So you want a way to blocking you from going to say domainx.com, not only on your pc but your phone.. And you want this method also to prevent any sort of circumvention on your part while maintaining your admin status on all your devices?

Yeah that doesn't exist - other than simple self control.. Its real freaking simple - don't go to domainx.com

edit: changing router password, he could just reset it. Don't forget you would also have to block all access to other dns at the router, or he could just change his machine to use other than opendns or his router.

you won;t be able to get it to connect to your ISP - why is that.. That would be the case if he was on PPPoE sort of connection. But my router requires no auth to the isp, just on cable.

Man up and use some self control for gosh sake..

What keeps him from slapping his sister up side the head and saying I don't care what I said before, give me the password ;)

That won't work though because he still wants to be able to access the router.

The problem that you have, bman, is that you know more than the average user about technology and you still want access to various areas. By having access to those areas, you have the ability to disable anything that is offered as a solution.

Your only real option without locking yourself out of the areas that you still want to access will be to exercise some self restraint, from what I can see.

Here is the thing, all that will happen is vs spending time on domainx.com, he will not just devote his time to circumvention of the controls put in place. There is no way to solve this sort of issue while you have access or control over the devices that provide you the access other than self control.

Lets say you put in perfect no way to access - what keeps you from using non controlled device or internet access.

See I understand this isn't exactly possible, so thank you for the information.

But saying have some self control is so bloody annoying. If I had self control over certain things, then I wouldn't have a problem would I? Just because your able to control yourself and be awesome, does not mean everyone has that ability. Or if they do, its extremely hard for them. Yes, I understand this is the solution, self control, but I need help, which is why I asked.

I guess I will have to give up control of my router, and hope I don't just reset it, I don't think I am that crazy lol Of course, the issue is my sister does not live with me, so if I have to do some other kind of changes/work, I have to wait for her to come over (which is a problem for her) to change it.

Ah, I've got a PPPoE connection here, so an ISP auth password is needed; I didn't realise a cable type connection did not require this.

If she does not live with you, then why you want to block or filter something? You have the trust problem with her?   I thought you want to block something so someone in your household can not access the sites..

Be a man and sit down with her and discuss about the rules about sites and all.

then you really shouldn't have admin access over anything as you will find ways around it.

It is like giving an alcoholic, while he knows he is an alcoholic and he needs to stop, a bottle and telling him not to open it.  You have the bottle in your hands, metaphorically, as  you have administrative control over everything in your possession.  You can put the bottle under a pillow (hide or disable whatever sites), but you know it is there and how to lift the pillow (circumvent the disabling of the sites) to be able to gain access to the bottle.

You need to go to an aa meeting..the first step is to admit you have a problem.

I do not get what is so complicated?

I am trying to block myself, my sister was talked about as she would be the one holding the passwords, that is all.

I am blocking food delivery sites, I am fat and have a bad habit of eating only crap. This is what I am trying to block.

Then I suggest that you go to therapy/rehab for that.

I think you've misunderstood why we're saying "self control" as an answer. You might think that it's an annoying answer to hear, but if someone asks "what is 2+2?" you're not going to tell them that the answer is 5 just because they don't want to hear "4."

Simply put, there doesn't appear to be anything available that will definitely keep you away from the websites you want to block. The solutions that have been offered will either cause issues for other people/devices, or you will be able to defeat them if you can't stop yourself from trying to access the websites.

A model is no longer included in the download and installation reducing their sizes. Improved the System theme to follow the operating system palette on Windows (darker and more contrast), and improved its appearance on macOS dark mode. Added Settings > Theme > System Fusion that combines the operating system palette with the monochrome, symbolic icons of the Fusion themes. Added an Outline video filter that uses the input alpha channel--useful with rich text or assets with a transparent background. This means that, like Drop Shadow, it will not work as expected when used after a text filter on a video or image clip. Rather, you must use a text clip (transparent color generator with text filter) on an upper track. Other New Features Added the ability to drag the waveform peak line to adjust audio gain. Added Settings > Timeline > Adjust Clip Gain/Volume to turn off the above. Added rolling an edit/trim to Timeline: Hold Ctrl (command on macOS) while trimming to simultaneously trim the neighbor clip. Added a Soft Focus filter set. Added Audio/Video duration to the Slideshow Generator dialog, defaults to 4 hours. This facilitates using Slideshow Generator to make transitions between everything when including both video and images. (It still respects the source duration and in & out points; duration here is a maximum.) Surround Sound Mixing Improvements Added fader and surround balance to the Balance audio filter if channels > 2. Added Channels toggle buttons to many audio filters: Band Pass Compressor Delay Downmix Equalizer: 3-Band Equalizer: 15-Band Equalizer: Parametric Expander Gain/Volume High Pass Low Pass Limiter Mute Noise Gate Notch Added support for 4 channels in the Copy Channel audio filter. For example, now you can: Copy stereo music to the rear channels and use the fader in the Balance filter to reduce its volume, Downmix spoken word into the center channel and apply a Band Pass filter to it, and Route music or sound effects to the low-frequency channels and apply a Low Pass filter to it. Other Improvements Changed the default Export > Audio > Rate control to Average Bitrate for AAC, Opus, and MP3. Added the ability to add/use multiple Mask: Apply filters. Added support for Scrub While Dragging to trimming on the timeline. Added hold Shift to ripple-trim when Ripple is turned off. Added French (Canadian) and Lithuanian translations. Fixes Fixed Mask: Apply with multiple Mask: Simple Shape (broke in v25.05) Fixed exporting projects containing only Generator clips on Windows (broke in v25.05). Fixed converting 10-bit full to limited range (broke in v25.01). Fixed dropdown menus using Settings > Theme > System on Windows. Fixed Balance and Pan audio muted channels if audio channels > 2. Fixed Export > Use hardware encoder fails with H.264 on macOS 15. Fixed Properties > Convert or Reverse for iPhone 16 Pro videos with Ambisonic audio. Fixed a single frame fade out filter would either mute or make black. Fixed repairing a project (e.g. broken file links) with proxy turned on. Fixed doing Freeze Frame on the first frame of a clip. • Win8 still takes the crown though in terms of worst Microsoft OS which all boiled down to it's horrible interface upon release as it was actually difficult to do even basic stuff. I remember trying it in a VM early on and it was a chore doing the basics we have had for ages and I quickly dumped that and never bothered with it again. in fact, prior to Win11 it was the only OS from Microsoft I have never used/had on a real machine and I have been using windows from Win v3.11 in mid-1990's through Windows 10. basically Win v3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2k, XP, 7, Vista, 10. but putting Windows 8 aside, I would probably place Win11 next in line (lets start from WinXP to date since that's basically when Windows got good and PC's pretty much went mainstream), but at least Win11 is not in the 'horrible' category as at least it's basic interface is normal. but if I ignore the interface, Win11 is a strong candidate, not only for telemetry and the like, but forced "requirements" which make people jump through hoops we should not have to all in the name of "better security", which personally I think is not enough of a boost to justify the forced "requirements". but one area you can tell Linux is faster is installing updates and, as a bonus, we generally don't need to reboot (short of like Kernel updates but those I am in no rush as my longest every main PC system uptime without a reboot was Aug 2023 until Jan 2025). but yeah, I suspect all of the background junk Windows has running does slow things a bit. p.s. speaking of that 'CachyOS', I used one of their custom Proton's (on Lutris) to get NTSync recently as while I usually use the more typical 'GE-Proton10-10' (this and '10-9' have NTSync support which was added recently. but 10-9 you have to manually enable where as 10-10 is automatic if it's available in the kernel to the system), I have one game which does not play back in-game videos with the Proton 10 series (you can hear audio but it's basically a black screen) but works in the 9 series and 'CachyOS' had a build from Jan 2025 that has NTSync, so I used that and it worked. I had to use 'PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1' though since it's not enabled by default (along with 'sudo modprobe ntsync', or setup a udev rule etc if you want it to work in reboots without needing to do that command). one can see NTSync is working through MangoHud if you setup 'winesync' (just add that entry to "~/.config/MangoHud/MangoHud.conf") in the configuration file for ManngoHud or if you want to directly see it in proton log I did 'PROTON_LOG=1', which then creates a log in the Home folder which, at least on GE-Proton10-10, creates 'steam-default.log' and in that shows "wineserver: NTSync up and running!" where as if you don't it will generally show "fsync: up and running."
    • Riverdale... in space? Hope not.
    • Then why didn't Apple upstream their feature?
    • Unix is in fact not open source.
