hi u all & thnx 4 the great work :)

it'll be a little bit off-topic but i'm very curious about this:

is there a way to slipstream all updates that comes with AutoPatcher XP into the setup files like the slipstreaming SP1 into XP Gold ?

i mean with this batch method, we just create a CD that contains AutoPatcher XP files aside of the XP setup files (also unattended installation thingies - which i appreciated much) but it's not same as slipstreaming into the setup.

i know what you mean, and unfortunately...there isn't a way to do it.

the closest thing to true slipstreaming with hotfixes is this running the hotfixes in the T-13 min stage, and that takes about 20 minutes to run.

info on that here:

take out the spaces

I am hoping to work extensively w/ the APXP team to reduce the size of APXP when copying to the CD

The concept that i have is to have APXP create a custom directory that copies over ONLY the needed files that

a user has specified in the setup and saved as a default. That way my batch file could just copy over the files

specified by the user. this could potentially reduce the space required for APXP to add more apps and drivers all

on the install CD.

I would like to say thank you for all your hard work! I love this. It makes things so easy.

Now I have a question. I really want to help you guys out, but I'm not really a coder. I look for bugs, and I am not finding any. I would really like to help you test out different things you are trying. I have no problem formatting my pc at your request. I have everything all backed up anyways. PM me if you think that I can help you out in anyway. Thanks again!

shifty, add us on MSN, we might have to make something special :D

actually, jason would have to 'associate' database entries with their needed files... not batch files, but actualy files!... that means ill have to make up a new format for such a file... and you are more than welcome to come along and work with us... i hope you know some VB :D

I have gotten tons of feed back from emails from lots of you!!

i am going to incorporate it into the next build the best i can.

for now though, please post them here for others to get inspiration and more ideas!!

tomorrow afternoon, i'll be posting some of the thoughts and suggestions that i have so far

and others have suggested.

stay tuned!!

Please help... I "thought" I followed the guide word for but I have made several coasters now. During the CD boot process, I get an error saying "Line 21 of winnt.sif is invalid, setup cannot continue" The batch setup says all goes well, but I get this error every time. I am on my fourth CD, rebuilding the XPCD folder every time, I am at a loss. Here is my winnt.sif file minus key:

I have one word for you: Rewritable.

Ok, I am having a problem. I got my cd all built, with prelog in, modified install screen, modified boot screen etc etc. I have ran it three times in virtual PC, and confirmed that it functioned as I intended it too. Went to load a buddies new p4, first rl test. It goes thru everything, runs AP with no problem and does the final reboot. I get Windows loading, then black screen, no hard drive activity, nada.

If you reboot at that time you get windows did not start properly etc, so I choose safe mode. It seems to load up to and including a file called mup.sys (If I remember correctly) then simply hangs for as long as you let it, with no hard drive activity.

My personal machine had been acting very flaky the last few days, and needed a reload, so I erased the first partition, and tried it on it. Exact same results.

I am attaching the cfgs and cmds I used in various places, see what Im doing stupid pls.

configs.rar

Btw, theres a call in those to a cmd window suppresser, I hate seeing that window pop up while loading.....

Edited:

Also, just to make sure you know, I did not use your file to make this, this is cobbled together from several sources and websites, including some bits and parts of yours. I left credit in where I could. And I want it clear that I do NOT think AP has a thing to do with my problem. That being said, have at it

this seems like a great idea and all, but honeslty, i dont think this should have been released until major major testing was done on it. I mean, 5 installs on 5 different types of machines, etc...just reading through the thread seems like people are having all sorts of issues, and this is a pretty serious thing your doing here. Once youve determined everything is 100% correct, ill go ahead and give it a try.

Good job for creating this however, i know i wouldnt have been able to do it.

Mike

I have installed my batch, yes, to 5 different machines, but beta testers have successfully installed it on their

various machines, intel/amd, whatever...

I did have to go and re-edit some of the lines in the batch to accomidate things that people are doing differently.

The next release will be more simplified and more customizable to really get more out of this.

for now, if you have a spare box and some time, go ahead and try it.

if you just run the batch file, it will work unless you add extra things in different places

that i didnt support initially. its a "try extra things at your own risk" i will try to help out where ever possible.

shifty:

1. how can i delete all the unneeded languages manually to save space.. (i368/lang)

i only need the arabic lang (Complex Script , ID=13).

i added rem to the two lines in your builder, so now i have the lang folder but i don't know which files to delete and which to keep to have arabic support.

2. useing autopartition=0 will i be asked for which drive to use and the type (ntfs or fat) to format it.

thanks for the nice guide...

1. its hard for me to say which language pack is the arabic one... I have a US version and it has

all latin based languages and some asian languages. I checked the CD and it doesnt have the arabic language

files... im looking into find a spot on the MS website to manually download the language files.

2. as far as autopartion, 0 will prompt you to which drive to format and install windows on.

if you make it 1 it will automatically format the first phyical drive into NTFS.

Two Questions:

1) The last time I used a boot.bin file (not this one though was in another thread), when I booted from the CD, windows install started but then got in a loop asking to put a disk in the "A:" drive and I couldn't keep going. Did I do something wrong?

2) I have Windows XP Pro - student ed. When you install it, it asks for the Windows 9x CD. I've purchased Win98. What file is it looking for specifically on the CD? I'd like to put it on the slipstreamed CD so I won't need to pull the CD out.

as for the #2 question. i do know for a fact that the setup on your XP CD looks for either win9x installed on a local drive or looks for a specific 9x file

on the 9x install CD. theoredically you can probably get my FULL install setup.exe file and try that and reburn the CD, or send me you setup file and i can

do a comparison. worse comes to worse you might have to send me your entire CD, i compare the 2 and figure out how to circumvent the 9x check.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
