Hi all!

Most of you know me from my other app "musiX". I'd like to show you another small project I've been working on for the last few weeks (sorry this distracted me from the musiX development :) Actually this one came in handy, as I needed a little break from musiX. But I'm getting back at it this week!).

My new app is called SnapX. And it doens't do that much, it just takes screenshots (and can save them in jpg, png, tiff and bmp). You'll now think: hey, another one of those... Well, this one has a very subtle difference compared to other snipping tools: it allows changing the dimensions of the snapped screenshot in cm and ppi (support for inches will be included soon). To most, that's probably useless, and I understand that :) However, this application was created because, at work, we needed an application which does just that. Our document management system takes into account PPI info of screenshots to size images correctly when exporting to word and PDF. It saves us tons of time when the screenshot tool allows doing just that. Before SnapX, we had to take screenshots, open the screenshots in photoshop, change PPI, save again, and then insert the images in the document manager. I haven't found any other screenshot tool that does that (however I won't claim it doesn't exist) so I created one.

I would like to thank Jan for the help with the borderless window and for allowing me to use it. It is his creation and looks magnificent on his apps.

SnapX is tested on Windows 7 and 8.1 and requires .NET framework 4.5 or higher.

SnapX can be downloaded here: http://raphaelgodart.tumblr.com in the Downloads section. It is free (as in beer), has no cr*polio included, the installer doesn't nag you with anything. Just clean and as user friendly as possible. And, here is a screenshot:

So I have to admit, I forgot all about this.

Things that would make me consider using on a more permanent basis, some may already be there but I missed the option;

  • Start with system
  • run in system tray
  • Option to configure a hot key Win + x etc
  • An option to auto save the JPG to a specific location and then update save once amendments have been made
  • option to annotate screen shot - add highlight boxes, draw arrows, text etc

I think some of them are features you don't get in software unless you are paying for it so I wouldn't expect to see them but just my thoughts. Its a nice program that does exactly what its set out to do, it just couldn't replace OneNote for me or Snagit If I paid :p

Awesome start. I love the built-in Snipping Tool in Windows. Here are my suggestions for SnapX:

  • Portable version! I love when you can test out software before you install it.
  • Snipping Tool saves the capture to the clipboard automatically. Would be awesome if SnapX could do this.
  • Editor - Snipping Tool has an editor after you take the screenshot where you can draw/highlight and email the screenshot.

BTW, 7-zip allows you to extract your setup executable and you can run it that way, before you install it.

So what's the difference between your app and windows snipping tool?

Mine has less features! Just wanted to show what I made.

Edit: I actually made it because I couldn't find a snipping tool that allowed changing the ppi of the snipped image. The need came from: at work we're using a company-made documenting system which, unfortunately, sizes images on the generated documents according to the ppi. It's messy, and until my app, we had to take screenshots with the Windows Snipping tool, then open the images in photoshop and change the ppi.

    • This is needed! Good to see them working on it. My solution up until now at work is to hide all MY folders, showing only the shortcuts, but linking my personal folders to the corresponding Libraries. Having this exposed in the Navigation pane of File Explorer means that I have easy nested access to my stuff, as well as all the shortcuts under the OneDrive folder when needed, often open as I only have about 10 or so linked sources.
