Looking for a good LED monitor

Recommended Posts

I currently have a 22" LG Flatron - M227WDP.

It's nice enough. Nice size but some times when i'm watching things, sections of the screen are quite dark. Like TV programs, DVDs etc. Plus i prefer LED screens anyway.

I'm debating between remaining 22" or shifting up to a 24" monitor, but that should be plenty big enough.

I'm not a huge gamer although i do play some games online. Shooters mainly. Just in case this makes a difference.

What monitors should i be looking at? Brands to go for / brands to avoid? Specific monitors. Looking for something crystal clear, not something that's all pixellated.

I know the one i currently have is a monitor/TV combo. I'm not really bothered about the new one being the same setup. It could be just a monitor only as i don't use this monitor as a TV anyway, plus there will be no incoming ariel to the room it will be in.

No photo editing that's for sure although i have started editing videos.

Like i said, i game online but i'm not a hardcore gamer.

That aside, i want a good quality screen that is nice & clear.

I've been looking at desk arm clamp things too which i think perhaps i may want. Not necessarily this specific model but to give you an example of what i just tried referring to... http://www.ebuyer.com/276499-ergotron-neo-flex-45-174-300-lcd-arm-45-174-300

I'll just randomly pick a couple monitors as i don't know whether they're any good or not....

Interestingly remaining LG. Many of the brands on that site i'd never heard of, some i had.

I'm also connected to my graphics card via HMDI so i'd need one of those ports

Dell makes the best monitors on market today, that should be enough said :)

Dell monitors are very good. I have one myself. However, I haven't owned enough monitors to know if they are the best.

I have a HP monitor at work. Also very good. Good enough to say the only answer isn't Dell - very little, if anything, between them

I got one of these for right around $200 and love it:

It's 25", but I came from a 22" as well. It's about the perfect size for me. I game quite a bit. The picture is great, but it is glossy.

Take a look at this video:

Which shows one of these:

Go to 1:18 in the video. You'll see holes in the rear of the monitor.

Do all flatscreen monitors have these holes?

I think i would perhaps buy an arm, not necessarily that one but certainly that sort of idea. I wouldn't want to be unable to mount the monitor on to the arm though, i'd at least like the option. Who knows i may leave the monitor on the desk but i quite like the idea of it being raised up & easily moved.

Yeah, they all pretty much have them. The mounting system called VESA followed by a number, for monitors it's usually VESA 100x100 (it will be mentioned on the monitor's spec sheet). You'll just need to buy an arm that supports it.

LED-backlit are nothing compared to true LED screens.

However, there are hardly any LED monitors at the moment.

Still, you, like many, have fallen for marketing hype :(

It annoys me when companies stick "LED TV" on the boxes of LED-backlit TVs.

I've seen a true 60" LED TV in real life and the colors, everything about it, blows away any LED-backlit TV.

ROLL ON TRUE LED MONITORS! :D

There is no such thing as a true LED screen. The screens that you describe (full matrix LED backlit) are still LCD screens.

Edge lit screens are most common and provide poor contrast compared to full matrix screens.

Surley, you mean OLED ?   THERE IS NOT SUCH THING, AS TRUE LED.

ps, why did you feel the need to use CAPS????

EDIT:   after some research.  just as i though, the only "TRUE LED" displays are OLED.  unless you count outside displays that use 3 colors only.  they are true LED but irrelevant to the discussion.

Drifting a little off topic but what about the TVs then?

I see TVs labelled up as LED & they look really good quality.

This aside, i will be getting a 4K TV as they look unreal on another planet with the quality, but that's irrelevant.

    • The thing you look at when buying a computer or laptop is not the CPU/RAM/SSD. You are looking at what features are on the system. USB 2/3/4/c, GPU, (not for the gaming aspect, but if you want nice movies, this helps) and other helpful add-ons. Keyboard media keys, for example. Also long battery life is a plus, too. Might want to also mention what brands you are looking at. Dell, Lenovo, Frameworks, etc. Edit: Unless you are looking for a laptop for portability, get a desktop.
