Remote desktop to windows 8.1 from Mac

Recommended Posts

hey there people :) , im looking for a software on Mac that Can do remote desktop assistance on desktop but being as fast as the "microsoft remote desktop" software.

I want an imac 5k as my primary computer (or my macbook pro that I already have) and put my gaming computer next to my Tv for movies and stuff. (I want my Pc to be a media pc mostly)

I want to be able to control my Gaming computer running windows 8.1 from my Mac but here's what I got for now:

Microsoft remote desktop is amazing ultra-fast but it locks the user account on the pc so you can't see the mouse moving on the remote screen.

Teamviewer is incredibly slow....

Im looking for more softwares like microsoft remote desktop speed-wise but like teamviewer for the non-locking account thingy.

Thanks :)

You could try out Splashtop, I've always used it from a mobile device but I notice it has a Mac client also. It's fairly fast and as far as I know it doesn't lock the user account on Windows.

Chrome Remote Desktop might be worth considering too, not sure if it works with Mac or not though.

Wow thanks, It's best one ive tested yet.

Let the suggestions coming

Using VNC will work. RealVNC or TightVNC. Install the server on the gaming pc and remote in using connect to server via finder on mac. Mac has VNC built in so it will launch "screen sharing" and connect you to the remote pc.

VNC allows multiple connections to the same user so it won't lock the screen and it will show the cursor being moved around. It's just as fast as RDP if not faster if tuned properly. If used in a local network it doesn't matter

Team Viewer works fine for me, I would check it's doing a LAN connection (needs to be configured on the target / host machine) rather than a WAN connection.

Splashtop probably still offers better performance over LAN but it can have a moment if you change resolutions or don't cleanly exit full screen applications.

Personally, out of all of the options, teamviewer is the best one.  While VNC is good, imo it is crappy on OS X.  Using vnc from a windows computer to a windows box or an OS X computer is just fine.  Remember though, your experience is always going to depend on both your isp and the end connection.

I always use Chrome Remote Desktop since somehow I can't get Microsoft Remote Desktop to work in OS X. Works well if you ask me, better than Teamviewer at least.

And it really just depends what you need it for. For the occasional game I use Steam streaming, even over WiFi the performance is great!
