File Manager (for Gentoo)

Recommended Posts

KDE is a bitch to compile so yes it sounds right. What you can do is log in on another terminal (ALT+F2 or another F key, ALT+F1 to change back) and check how many packages you have left with 'emerge --pretend kde' (if that's the package you choosen to emerge).

sweet !! thanks ..thats a cool feature .. so yea .. 4 packages left to merge ..

EDIT: one more question .. so in a different terminal .. can I emerge a different app ?

another question (sorry ..if I am being a nag :) ) [ebuild R ] what does that mean ? the package is installed ?

I installed Gentoo a couple of weeks ago and being a longterm Debian user I find it hard to say but I really love this Gentoo! Speaking of file managers, emerge gentoo. It is prettymuch a graphical version of mc. Since I have nice transparent Eterms on my desktop I tend to just use mc if i need a file manager though :p

Another change I made was going from KDE to Gnome. I've always used KDE in Debian but decided to try something different with Gentoo. I must say I feel Gnome gives me a more professional and stylish look and is certainly bloated of applications by default so i'm loving that change too :)

so yeah ..I did it .. I hosed my gentoo box .. deleted some files from sbin .. ( dont ask me why .. :) )

I started from scratch now .. but for some reason I cant chroot .. I mounted /dev/hda3 to /mnt/gentoo

and /dev/hda1 to /mnt/gentoo/boot and tried chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash ..but I get an error saying "No such file or directory"

That's a very constructive post abaxion. Perhaps next time you could try to post something useful if you have any idea what to do. Otherwise, I'd suggest you go away. ;)

Anway, Emon, I'd suggest making sure that /mnt/gentoo actually exists. I know that you have to create the /mnt/gentoo/boot directory before mounting, but I can't recall if it creates the /mnt/gentoo mountpoint automatically or not.

Also, anyone on Gentoo ever used rox-filer as a file manager? I've seen some screenshots and read a lot of good things about it, but there isn't an ebuild for it currently and I'm always leary of installing stuff that won't be in the tree to upgrade/uninstall later on.

hell, so difficult, use Windows

ha ha ...its not difficult at all .. I was just doing something dumb .. I figured out what I was doing wrong though ..

I didn't untar one of the stages and jumped right to where I have to mount the drives. Thats why it wasn't working.

wish Windows had something like emerge -u world :D

    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article?
    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.
    • It use to be a nightmare, with LibreOffice supporting a newer draft ODF standard by default, and Microsoft Office supporting the older non-draft standard. Now that they both support the same version of ODF, they should be interoperable.

    • Hi. As the title suggests, I can't access the forum on my phone. I'm using Edge on Android and when I try to navigate to the forum I get a "we value your privacy" popup and none of the buttons are clickable. It effectively stonewalls me from reading any forum content.
