Logo Designing: What's the best Software?

Question

So, I've been diving into the realm of Web Designing & Programming, recently. I've purchased a new domain, and I have an idea on a Logo that I wanted to work out but..

Here's the problem: I don't know what software would be best to use. I own the entire Adobe Creative Suite (Birthday Gift from a friend, she knows me best ;) ).

I've used Photoshop before, but frankly, I'm not sure. Wasn't sure if this was the right section, either.

So, what software should I make it in?

Photoshop seems to be the most popular one and is a raster graphics editor.

CoralDraw is considered as one of the best vector graphics editor (Illustrator is also very good).

I'd go with Photoshop but you could do the trial for them both and see which you prefer.

Also, what input do you have? Just keyboard and mouse, I assume?

For most basic things, Photoshop is great general purpose, but sometimes you need an outside program like Inkscape. Illustrator obviously has advantages if you're doing that kind of art work, but if you're doing a logo, I doubt you need that much detail.

If you use photoshop just stick with that. I've decided to ditch it as I was sick of paying the monthly fee.. I now use the Affinity suite of products (currently only Photo and Designer(illustrator)) .. I think they are only on the mac but i'd never look back to be honest, similar work flow to photoshop, faster and easier.

Vector or raster?

I don't even know what those are! Haha. Derp.

I just have a keyboard and mouse, but if theres a program out there to use a tablet as a drawing surface, I could do that.

I used to sketch, so I normally try to do that, but I'm not as good as I used to be. I stopped drawing when I was in elementary school, teased too much for being "artsy".

But Have it look like an actual corner, and have the 0s and 1s make a triangle, one sid would say "Data's" and the other would say "Corner". Thoughts on that?

Edit:

Apologies on the size, didn't realize that my iPhone 6+ was taking big ### pictures. Was a quick sketch.

Anyway logo's should be made from simple shapes, here's a nice tutorial for the twitter logo: http://www.awwwards.com/reconstruct-the-twitter-icon-using-circle-shapes.html

And here's a pepsi logo joke:

illustrator uses vector, you get a crisp graphic when zoomed in.

So what you're saying is, I should use Vector because it looks so much better while zoomed in.

Now, with that said, can I use Illustrator like Photoshop to design the logo I had in mind?

Illustrator is without a doubt the application you should be designing logos in. Even with the upgrades Photoshop has made recently with upsizing graphics, and also supporting Vector objects, there is just simply no replacement for having your logo as Vector based art.

And to answer the question above, any effects that you would want to add in Photoshop can usually either be done in Illustrator or recreated.

All I will say there is keep in mind anyone can apply an effect, so really the best approach is to make sure your logo looks good without them, meaning if you had to make your logo straight black and white, would it still look good?

Also realize most memorable logos and clean logos have little to no effects on them. They may add effects for different ad campaigns, etc., but usually the purest version of a logo is 75% of the time effects free.

I was aiming for Black & White with very little effect, if any, just a fade from Black to White. Let me work on it tonight, I work graveyard. I'll upload my thought on it.

Do we have a section for this kind of work?

Vector is a mathematical way of describing pixels on the page, thus meaning the logo will be infinitely scalable and modifiable no matter what size you want it, from postage stamp to advertising board.

Raster is a destructable method of creating images, and is far better suited for photo manipulation. 1px == 1px and upscaling becomes messy.

Vector is what you want for logos, and therefore i suggest Illustrator.

    • This is needed! Good to see them working on it. My solution up until now at work is to hide all MY folders, showing only the shortcuts, but linking my personal folders to the corresponding Libraries. Having this exposed in the Navigation pane of File Explorer means that I have easy nested access to my stuff, as well as all the shortcuts under the OneDrive folder when needed, often open as I only have about 10 or so linked sources.
