My car's stolen first time

Recommended Posts

Sorry to hear that! Can't imagine anything worse!

What is the story surrounding the theft? What year was the car? Was it stolen with the keys in the car (running idle for some reason)? Has it been recovered?

I keep my car as clean and as bare inside as possible. I figure it is a theft deterrent as it makes my car look like a rental car. Also, the less I have in it the less I have to worry about losing in a theft scenario. I have to do on street parking in a major city so I'm very vulnerable theft wise. Did you also have it parked on the street?

That was Nissan Pathfinder 2013. I decided to sold it for some personal reasons. And a couple of potential buyers came to test-drive. They were a bit suspicsious, but I didn't notice at first.

So we rode a bit, they said they love my car and agreed for my price.

After that we sat inside the car to discuss deal detailes and one of them hit me! I tried to get out of the car and successed. BUT: keys and other stuff stayed inside the car! They left immediately after I got out of the car.

That's how I lost my car. Stupid.

Sad to hear that...one advantage of newer vehicles is the tracking ability if this happens again.... :(

Surely! Will install tracking system!

See, this is why I think all cars should have tracking installed like OnStar has... but don't charge for the tracking part... that way you can use "Find My Car" to report it to the police... or have them disable the car completely if you pay the service fee, etc.... i think find my car should be on all new cars, yes there is the whole tin foil hat issue, but if you want to you should be able to disable it at a dealer once you proved it is your car at least in my opinion... I think onstar charges about $250 a year for stolen vehicle services...

Wow! I'm glad you're OK as criminals that brazen are very dangerous and unpredictable. The car can be replaced or recovered, but you're life isn't as easy.

Were the cops able to arrest these criminals? I hope so.

Not sure about the Pathfinder, but I know my Mercedes comes with an OnStar competitor (called MBrace) that offers built in tracking ability that can help the police recover it as they can track it real time. You may not have to purchase anything special for this functionality (I do have to pay annually for the service though).

you can get insurance discounts for OnStar and equivalent services also since they help protect the property

They don't include this for free due to the backend costs associated with it...

For instance, my Mercedes has a service you can pay ~$280/y (~$23/m) for that acts a lot like OnStar. You can locate your car on your phone if you're within 1 mile of the car (for privacy reasons they cite). Of course, they can track the car in real-time when working with the police. But to get the data back to them or your phone you need cellular service to do it. Free an open WiFi isn't ubiquitous so you'll lose the ability to reach out to the car without a cellular data connection. Cell phone companies won't provide this for free.

To me the MBrace fee is well worth it. It was very helpful when I had my car accident to be able to have someone immediately pop up to help me out. It was also helpful when I used it to get help for a motorist I saw injured on the highway even though I wasn't exactly sure where I was on I-90 in NY. Being able to get real-time tracking of my car and a phone call or text message if my alarm goes off is also very nice features to have.

Sorry to hear that. That's what kind of low life's are all around now a days!

Never had my stuff stolen but my kids truck was stolen a few weeks ago. Dude that stole it worked with him. Was already on parole for a bunch of other crap. Wish he would've gotten seriously hurt in the crash he got into when chased by cops!!

See a little bit of the chase at the link below.

5 post on Neowin, decides to share his car has been broken into.. Sounds like more BS from the guy who makes all the crazy stories up (the friend that got pregnant was one story)

Don't forget that that guy could be lurker before joined Neowin and decided to rant about his stolen vehicle.

my car got stolen before too and cop found it a week later in a city that was 2 hours away. There was a news going on that bunch Asian thieves were going around city to city stealing cars... and they put a blank Mexican CD case in my trunk thinking it was Mexican who stole it. Bastard. I hope they all die in car crashes.

story sounds suspicious, especially since you never said if you called the cops or were interested in getting your 2013 nissan back

if they test dove and robbed in during the day you should be able to provide a description and details to how they got in contact with you (as tiagosilva29 said)

Sux, never been robbed in that sense but got one car stolen before... Acura Integra which was the most stolen car for a few years. When I got it, it wasn't so bad but then it shot up to the top of the list. It was stolen at like 4am and then found 6hrs later on blocks striped of ALL parts!!!

I have a BMW now and while not impossible to take, they are much harder these days. I also have BMW Assist stuff which is like OnStar or Mbrace so I can track and control it from my phone app :). It also has immobilizer for the engine so nobody in their right mind will try to take it. They could always load it up on a flatbed so people don't think too much about the theft but that's the only way they will be moving it otherwise !

Again, sorry to hear and hope they find the bastards!

Sad to hear that...one advantage of newer vehicles is the tracking ability if this happens again.... :(

If my car gets stolen, generally speaking, I don't want it back; it's much easier to get the insurance company to write it off as a loss and get you into a new car than fighting over the damage of a recovered vehicle. Second, insurance companies won't cover you getting HIV from a needle left by the douche that stole the car. Third, the car will never feel the same...

Very glad they caught the guy who stole the truck. He was nice enough to do all that when the police caught up with him so he should be spending some quality time in prison.

Hopefully insurance got your kid a nice newer truck.

I wouldn't be happy if someone stole my car, but I'm also not going to want them dead either. The car is just a car. Insurance will buy me a new one.

see that's what gets me though... OnStar and it's rivals say it can't be done for free... yet my insurance company will get me for free an ODB2 plug that has a GSM radio in it and GPS to track my driving habits.. even give me the ability to geolock driving for teen drivers and get notifications when they go out of the area. and it doesn't' cost me a cent, actually it reduces my insurance rate.. if the insurance company can do it, why can't others? sure we are paying them an insurance fee but it's required by law... why not make all cars to be insured have this ability? If they wanted to they could see where the car was last...

The insurance company is paying for it and they have a strong incentive to do so. By getting you to use such a device they now have access to a richer set of data about the driving habits of anyone driving the car which they can then use to better gauge your risk. Do you hard brake a lot? Accelerate hard? Drive often in hours of high risk? etc...

If we mandated such devices to be placed in cars and insurance companies to foot the bill it would work financially, but I'm not sure drivers would universally embrace it for privacy reasons among other things.

well you buy a car with onstar in it now, you already should be worried about it... the FBI or anyone else could have them enable it in tracking mode and just watch you.... you'd never know... so privacy reason wise, the "threat" is already there if your car has a system installed... when GM sells cars they record the VIN and who owns it, they give this data to OnStar also for service if ever activated... not hard for the FBI to get an order to get them to enable the ability to follow you now days... but then its also not hard for them to magnetically strap on a gps transponder to your cars frame and do the same.....

    • JBL BAR 800 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar is an amazing deal today by Sayan Sen This Amazon Prime Day 2026 sales so far we have had a couple of nice deals related to sound and audio. First we have the Sennheiser HD 600 at its lowest ever price of just $225. Next we also have the Beats Studio Pro at its lowest price ever at just $150. However perhaps you prefer your gear to sound great on a larger scale, like throughout the room. In that case an all-in-one soundbar system can help and currently JBL's BAR 800 is a great deal for sure as it's up for grabs at just $600 (purchase link under the specs table down below). One thing that should be appreciated a lot about these JBL soundbars is their spec sheet and the frequency response data it provides. The firm is honest about it as JBL confirms the subwoofer is able to go down to 35 Hz at -6dB or F6. This means it should be covering 40Hz and up very well, where most of the bass lies. You miss out on a lot of sub-bass but that is to be expected given the price point and the subwoofer driver size. Speaking of which, it is a 10-inch driver and promises a max output power of 300 watts at 1% THD (total harmonic distortion). JBL also claims the system will provide you with a "True Dolby Atmos" experience. The surround speakers are wireless and battery-powered which means setting them up should be really convenient. The technical specs of the JBL BAR 800 are given in the table below: Specification Value Channel Configuration 5.1.2-channel soundbar system Dolby Atmos Yes, with 2 up-firing drivers Total System Power Output 720 W Soundbar Power Output 340 W Surround Speaker Power Output 2 × 40 W Subwoofer Power Output 300 W Soundbar Drivers 3 × 46×90 mm racetrack drivers, 3 × 20 mm tweeters, 2 × 70 mm up-firing full-range drivers Surround Speaker Drivers 1 × 46×90 mm racetrack driver (each speaker) Subwoofer Driver 10-inch (260 mm) wireless subwoofer Frequency Response 35 Hz – 20 kHz (-6 dB) Audio Inputs Optical, Bluetooth, Chromecast built-in, AirPlay, Alexa Multi-Room Music (MRM), USB* HDMI Inputs 1 HDMI video input HDMI Output 1 HDMI eARC output HDCP Version 2.3 HDR Pass-Through HDR10, Dolby Vision Bluetooth Version 5.0 Wi-Fi Version 6, 6E Streaming Services Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay, Alexa MRM Get it at the link below: JBL Bar 800-5.1.2-Channel Dolby Atmos soundbar with Detachable Surround Speakers (Black): $599.85 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US with Prime) Prime subscription can be cancelled within three business days. • Microsoft releases PowerToys v0.100.1, fixes a bug that made remapped keys misbehave by Ivan Jenic Microsoft just released PowerToys v0.100.1, a patch update that addresses several stability and behavior issues found in v0.100.0. The v0.100.0 patch was a significant update for PowerToys, as it introduced all sorts of new features and additions, such as a rebuilt Shortcut Guide, a Command Palette Extension Gallery, webcam overlay support in ZoomIt, and more. However, the v0.100.0 version also introduced some bugs and stability issues. And now, Microsoft is addressing these issues in the new patch. The most impactful fix in this release perhaps is in Keyboard Manager, where remapped modifier keys were being delivered as system-key events, causing unexpected behavior in apps. The clearest example of this was Alt-to-Backspace remaps, deleting whole words instead of a single character. So, if you thought there was an issue with your keyboard, Microsoft just confirmed that it was PowerToys. Beyond the Keyboard Manager fix, v0.100.1 also addresses several other issues. It fixes a bug with Power Display that was preventing monitors from waking from standby correctly. Additionally, the new update patches Quick Access crashes on launch, and resolves a Shortcut Guide crash that occurred when switching between sidebar sections. Here’s the full changelog: Color Picker Fixed a bug where the main Color Picker window could appear inside the zoomed-in picker view Command Palette Fixed Run history initialization in AOT builds Fixed a bug where the Performance Monitor dock item could show ??? after restart Fixed the Hibernate command using the Sleep icon Limited the "pin to dock" dialog to displays where the dock is enabled Keyboard Manager Fixed modifier keys remapped to non-modifier keys being delivered as system-key events, which caused unexpected behavior in apps such as Alt-to-Backspace deleting whole words Power Display Fixed a bug where selecting On in the monitor power-state control did not wake a monitor from standby Fixed built-in display detection and brightness control on dual-GPU laptops where the internal panel is driven by the discrete GPU PowerToys Run Fixed VS Code Workspaces discovery after VS Code moved recently opened workspace data to shared storage Quick Access Fixed Quick Access flyout crashes caused by unhandled XAML exceptions during launch or page navigation Shortcut Guide Fixed a crash when navigating between Shortcut Guide sidebar sections Fixed number-key rendering in shortcut manifests and added a Postman shortcut manifest Updated bundled shortcut manifests to use the literal number-key token so number keys render correctly across apps ZoomIt Fixed a race condition in audio initialization for ZoomIt video recording You can download PowerToys v0.100.1 from the official GitHub releases page.
