is there a way to change the default/the built-in icon of a programm file (of an *.exe file)

i just downloaded some icons designed for windows xp and they look way better than the icons the programs have (eg. photoshop). i know that you can change the icon of a shortcut, but i have many shortcuts and i think it would be better to change the icon of the programm file. (well: just trying to change the icon of photoshop.exe)

any ideas?

Hi guys,

I tried to change the Icons in the shell32.dll using the Resource Hacker 3.3.4

... but after replacing the Icons in the shell and saving the file to its original Location the old Icons reappeared.... so I did it again changing the icons saving the file ... but after reopening the file ... the old icons are still in the shell32.dll.....

Any suggestion ?

Yeah sometimes I have the same problems too... and I didnt figure out how to solve it... for example some applications see my new "Desktop" icon in the open/save window, some others no.... and I've not been able to figure out why. Or for example I can't change the .zip icon... it's still the same old Compressed folder, that looks terribly ugly in 64x64

There is a much easier way to change icons of file types, shodan I'm talking to you in particular. Open my Computer, goto Tools --> Folder Options --> 'File Types' Tab --> find the file type you want to change the icon for, select it and click on the 'Advanced' button. There you will see the option to change the icon, just browse to whenever you keep it and viola! The zip folder is magically beautiful again.

Geez thanks... I'm really dumb... I didn't think about that! Now it worked!!!

Ok, I tried to change the default folders to blue ones instead of the default yellow. I went to File Types and clicked on File Folder>Advance and changed the icon. This did not changed the icon for me. And now, everytime I double click to open a folder, a new search folder will pop up instead of it opening to show it's contents. Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

as for the problem with shell32.dll who couldn't get patched. as i read in other threads, the prob is that this file, shell32.dll, is always "in use" and when you patch it, you only patch the file on your hd, at shutdown, the file is overwritten with the unpatched file in the memory.

the solution i found is only for win98, you have to rename the file, boot into dos and replace the old one with the pathced one. but since xp hasn't a true dos-mode i was wondering if there is a solution for this!
