Can't Connect to Verbatim NAS (1TB) from Mac OS/X

Hi all,

 

Sorry if this isn't the correct place to post this, hopefully it is though, since the issues seems to only be with Mac's.

 

We've just set up a Verbatim 1TB NAS drive via ethernet connection. We're trying to connect to it from our Macbook's (we have two in the house and both have the same issue) but we're not able to. If we explore the drive and navigate to the shared folders using Finder we're unable to drag any files to the drive, we're given the round circle with the line through it over the thumbnail of the file we're trying to copy. We've tried it when we are logged in as Admin and also logged in as the owner of the shared folder we're trying to copy items to, both with the same result, we're unable to drag/drop anything to the drive. Not even to the public folder.

 

We tried connecting via the "Go - >Connect To Server" option and while it does connect to the drive it gives one of two errors: 1) The share does not exist on the server. OR 2) The folder can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.

 

I've looked around in the settings on the drive and each user is set to have writeable access to their folder and the public folder and the drive is formatted as FAT32, so there shouldn't be any compatibility issue with Mac OS/X.

 

Strangely, everything works fine from the Windows PC's. 

 

Has anybody else had any experience with this that could offer any ideas on what the issue might be? I looked through a couple of online manuals for the Verbatim NAS drives and they don't offer much help.

what flavor of os x are you running?

 

Your using the short name to connect?

 

So this is a soho nas??

 

Yosemite, 10.10.1 and we're using the IP address of the NAS to connect to it (we assigned it a static IP). It's mostly just for the family to copy across files to share (photos, videos, etc).

 

 

How are you trying to mount the shares?  Is it through smb or afp?  If you have yosemite installed remember that it only supports smb3 not smb2.  If you are trying to connect via afp, make sure that option is enabled within the nas .

Why on earth did you format it as FAT32?????

 

FAT32 doesn't support long filenames (ie longer that 8 characters)

 

Reset the NAS to defaults and try again...

PS It's a *NAS*. It doesn't make any difference how the drive is formatted UNLESS you are accessing it by USB.

the OS doesn't care what file system the NAS is formatted in if you are accessing it via file share... format it as ext3 and be done with it.

 

now if you are doing something like iSCSI or NFS then that would matter as the OS has direct access to the file system

It's probably smb2 if it is from 2011.  Does it has a software/firmware available for it?  Go into the nas software and see if afp is supported.  If so, turn it on and see if that works.

I don't see anything in there for afp, there is NFS and that's enabled. There doesn't seem to be any useful software or firmware from the Verbatim site and the manual basically says "plug it in, add your users and then connect to it from your pc/mac, et voila!" and that's what we've done.

 

I can see the drive on the network, I can connect to it with my user name and password... I just can't copy any files to it. Can't even copy anything into the "guest" folder which should be writeable for everybody on the network. Grrr!

are you using NFS? if not turn it off, if you are just using file shares you have no need for NFS

NFS has been switched off. I also reformatted as ext3. It seems to think that the user doesn't have permissions to access any of the folders on the NAS but that happens even when logged in as Admin which should, according to the manual, have access to everything. I really have no idea what the issue is :)

Problem solved. I downloaded some firmware off a blog that was posted 3 years ago (luckily the DL link was still active) and upgraded the firmware of the NAS. It appears to work as normal... for now. :)

 

Thank you to everyone who has helped with suggestions, it's much appreciated.

Hey, I have the same NAS and problems, too.

The internal drive doesn't mount. In windows it only shows 15,4mb free space and I cant upload files.

I tried to format it, but then the web-interface stopps working. I waited hours and nothing happened.

 

I didn't manage to find a firmware upgrade. I'm on 1.3.

Please, could you tell me where you've found yours? Or do you still have it?

maybe that fixes it..

      0 chance of that happening, forget it. Get it installed by some tech guy or do it yourself with the bypasses, that's how MS is being lenient and looking the other way to give users a chance.
