Windows 95 Winsock Error

Recommended Posts

I have an old 486 laptop that I run a Direct Connect Hub (i'm using Ptokax) on for my family to share photos, home movies, and to chat. It works fine, aside from the error message that pops up about every 8-12 minutes (it's not exact) I've attached a picture of the error message.

I've installed all the updates for winsock and networking for Win95 I could find, and the error still occurs. The hub software runs on my computer with absolutely no problems.

I also searched google for other peope who have had the problem, and it seems that a common cause for the message is a trojan...this laptop has no spyware/malware on it.

I have considered installing Debian's minimum install on it via an ftp server, but i'm afraid i won't be able to find network drivers for the PCMCIA network card in the laptop (it's brand new, i might)...but i'll save that for another thread if the need arises :)

Upgrading to another version of windows is not an option as the computer does not meet the minimum requirements for any later versions of windows.

Suggestions? :)

I suppose you have this Winsock upgrade

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

All this is way above my head, but it seems that the problem might lay with IPX protocol (instead of TCP/IP)

As per;

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/d...n95/mstcpip.asp

and

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;159254

Jesus, I can't believe some people are still on Windows 95. If I had a Windows 95 machine, it would be in the bin like 3 yeards ago.

this is just an old one i've put to some use...

my main box is running an athlon xp 2400 with a gig of ram and windows XP :)

For win95 the best way to fix the winsock was to install the DUN 1.3 update. But take my advice - NOTHING in win95 is easy. If you want to fix the problem i recommend installing win98 then troubleshooting it.

-gosh

trust me, if i could upgrade...i would.

but i can't.

    • Or use Epic games and get full games for free. lol Steam and their demos. Thankfully there’s competition
    • Maybe I missed it, but does this say anywhere that the game save bug has been squashed? I haven't encountered it myself, but it would be nice to know I'm good to go. Anyway, amazingly well done game. Mostly more of the same. ...but when the same is best in class with improved graphics and features, then a win.
    • Well when your game flops, you should expect this. If I do bad at work, I would expect a layoff. Less than 1600 people played it on steam. https://steamdb.info/app/1934570/charts/
