Recommendations for new routers

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I am in the lucky situation that I finally will get a good/fast (100 Mbit/s) Internet connection in my summerhouse. Since I have my NAS at home, and I don't want to move back and forth between the two places I am thinking about getting new routers, to replace the standard ones that comes with the Internet connections.

What I am looking for is a router which has the capability of creating a site-2-site VPN connection, with a reasonable bandwidth to allow streaming of 1080p movies. I don't mind paying for a quality product, but I am not keen on a yearly subscription/maintenance fee.

Please let me know about your experiences, recommendations and ideas.

sonicwall tz205 tz215 tz105 - features/speed (probably want a 215, I would ebay it or look for refurbished to save you some monies)

netgear nighthawk (has vpn support, I have not used it as I only need vpn in a business environment).

pfsense now has appliance they are selling that is $299  If you wanted dedicated firewall/router this is great option that is for sure.  And has aes-ni for your vpn performance.

Nope they are now tied to Cyberoam and they are cheats, liars and litigators.... they wanted to pay me 600 bucks to give one of thier UTMs a 10/10 and I declined so they threatened me with legal crap. Plus one of thier reps that sent me a freind request on FB had an abnormal amount of baby pics on his page. scary amount. Too much shady people at both sophos and cyberoam. DO NOT TRUST.

Those Sonicwall models are all EOL or going to be EOL soon. Look at TZ-300,TZ-400,TZ-500

Hello,

I would recommend MikroTik CCR-1009, the passively cooled version. I am using them for a similar situation, the software is very easy to use with many examples of site to site VPN configurations on the wiki. The hardware and software is designed for ISPs primarily but also works great for residential use.

Overkill, yes. Cheap yes.
