Hello! I am new to the site. A while ago I bought Call of Duty 2 for the PC. Whenever I try to run it it just comes up with "1608: Unable to create Install driver instance, return code: -2147024894". It's VERY frustrating So any help would be GREATLY appreciated. If you need me to specify any more issues please leave a reply.

Well, in order for us to help what Operating System are you using? I notice the tags you've chosen include Windows 7 and Windows 10.

I believe you the error you described has to do with intellishield and the DCOM settings.

”Error 1608” is a very system specific issue and is often caused by limited system privileges, incorrect DCOM settings, or another malfunction on the computer.

Method 1: Run SFC scan. System File Checker (sfc) scan will make Windows replace corrupt or missing system files on your computer.

 Steps to perform sfc scan:
a. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.
b. Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.
c. In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:
sfc /scannow

Refer this KB article for more information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Method 2: Re-register the windows installer

a.     Click Start, open the run box (windows key +R)

b.     Type msiexec.exe /unreg and click ok.

c.     If you receive a confirmation message, click OK again.

d.     Click Start, open the run box (windows key +R)

e.     Type msiexec /regserver and click ok.

f.      If you receive a confirmation message, click OK again.

g.     Try to install the application and see if the issue persists.

It seems, this is mostly related to an InstallShield error, I found references to a link but the link is dead. I used the wayback machine to check it out. Here is what they said to try, granted this is for much older than Windows 7. If you dont want to go through all of these steps you can try running the installer in compatibility mode as a last resort.,

Last Revised On: 12/11/2003

Problem

When running an installation on your computer, one of the following error message occurs at the beginning of the installation:

  • 1608: unable to create installDriver instance, return code: -2147319784
  • Error -1608: Unable to create InstallDriver instance

More Information

Error 1608 is a very system specific issue and is often caused by limited system privileges, incorrect DCOM settings, or another malfunction on the computer. This article provides possible resolutions that have been known to resolve this issue in the past. Depending on your system, you may need to try some or all of the listed solutions.

Fix

  1. DCOM Settings

    Windows NT/2000/XP

Check to make sure that your DCOM settings are configured to allow full permissions to the users. For more information on DCOM settings, refer toConfigure the DCOM Settings on Your Computer.

    Windows 95/98 Systems

If the error occurs on a Windows 95/98 system, it usually occurs if DCOM 95/98 is not installed or properly configured on the computer. To resolve this error message, download DCOM 95/98 from the Microsoft's Web site and install it on your computer:

    1. Go to the appropriate download page:
    2. Under Download Instructions on this page, click on the DCOM link, which looks like this:

      Dcom98Download.bmp

    3. Save the file dcom.exe on your desktop.
    4. Double-click dcom.exe to install it.

  2. Update the InstallScript Engine

This issue is often caused when the InstallScript engine is not installed on your computer. Follow the directions in the article Update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines to download and install the latest InstallScript engine.

  3. Manually Register IDriver.exe

If the above options do not help resolve the issue, manually register the file IDriver.exe on your computer. The manual registration process makes sure that all the required information for the file IDriver.exe is created in the Windows registry. This fixes any issues that cause IDriver.exe to not launch properly. Follow these instructions to register IDriver.exe:

    1. Determine the version of IDriver you need to register by navigating to theC:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver folder. Look for a folder named 7, 8, or 9. You may have all three. This is the version number you will need in step 3. In the example below, it is 7.

      idriverfolder.bmp

    2. Select Start > Run.
    3. Type "C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\<VERSION>\Intel 32\IDriver.exe" /REGSERVER. Replace <VERSION>with the number you found in step 1. For example:

      "C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\7\Intel 32\IDriver.exe" /REGSERVER

    4. Press OK.
    5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the other version numbers (7, 8, and/or 9).

  4. Install Client for Microsoft Networks

    1. Launch Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows key + E or by right-clicking Start and selecting Explore.
    2. Right-click on My Network Places and select Properties.
    3. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.
    4. If the check box for "Client for Microsoft Networks" is not selected, select it and click Install.

Uses SafeDisc DRM:

Call of Duty 2 also uses the SafeDisc copy protection system, which fortunately is not as intrusive or troublesome as the infamous secuROM system, but it still forces you to have the game CD in your CD/DVD drive to launch the game

SafeDisc is broken under Windows 10. You'll need to seek a patch from either Activision or elsewhere to play your game.

    • You might want to update to 1TB drive.  They are not very expensive these days, there are plenty of options - simple look I would think you could find a 1TB ssd or even nvme somewhere between 50 and 100 bucks. when I have moved to larger ssds in laptop in the past, you can just connect the drive via usb - image.  Then take the old drive out, put in the new drive and there you go..  If your concerned about how much space you have left this prob your best bet..
    • I see! Wasn’t aware of that. Even though they started off with desktop app for Mac before Windows. Should be on it’s way soon! 🤞
