So I thought it would be cool to have a thread specifically for character build ideas.

This is Roland, my Sniper. He's built to utilize laser rifles for sniping at a distance, and V.A.T.S. up close. His high Perception and Agility means he's extremely accurate and has a ton of action points to decimate enemies when up-close and personal. You'll note that his Perception only starts at 6, that's because

There is a SPECIAL book in your son's room when you return home which I use to get +1 Perception, and the Perception bobble head shows up VERY early in the game.

You will note that this is NOT a settlement build. I'm not taking skills to improve settlements with this guy. Instead, he is focused on getting into areas very quickly with access to Lockpicking and Hacker skills as soon as they become available. He also excels at modding his science-based equipment- so lasers and so forth, as opposed to bolt-action weapons. He's not the personable type, either, which has been fun.

I don't really like to min/max my build to that extent, especially on the first play through when I don't know how useful the various things will end up being.  I'll tweak on subsequent play throughs but I started with:

Strength - 4 (I wanted to take enough to get Armorer and Blacksmith if I decided I liked crafting and I didn't want it to be too low because I knew going in hauling loot would be an issue)

Perception - 4 (This I intend to raise but that's the baseline as it's enough to get Locksmith which I consider essential)

Endurance - 4 (This I was afraid to lower since it determines health)

Charisma - 6 (This I raised to get Local Leader if I wanted it but also to be above average for story based dialog options)

Intelligence - 5 (This I raised to get Scrapper which I consider an essential perk to take right away so I don't have to spend so much time looking for rare loot)

Agility - 3 (This I intend to raise but that's where I started to give me enough for sneak which I consider essential.)

Luck - 2 (This I don't care about much but I put enough to get scrounger if ammo became an issue.)

Perks:

I don't remember what order I got them in but I have Scrapper, Rifleman (2), Locksmith (2), Hacker(2), and Sneak (3) at level 12 with one point unspent (I keep one in reserve on my first play though just in case I need to grab a perk last minute that I didn't think about).

I haven't actually taken Armorer or Blacksmith as you can see as their crafting recipes don't look all that appealing to me yet, nothing else in Strength really appeals to me.  As I understand it from talking to friends the Armorer perks will look much more promising once tier 2 armor starts dropping.

Perception I'll likely raise eventually until I can get Sniper and it's home to Rifleman and Locksmith with are core skills for me.

Endurance I'll likely never take a perk from or raise but 4 gives me a solid baseline for heath.

Charisma I'll likely never raise but I think I'll eventually pick up Local Leader and maybe even Lone Wanderer and Animal Friend if points become abundant.

Intelligence I consider Scrapper and Hacker essential skills.  If my crafting takes off I'll likely raise this to get Science! as well.  I'll likely get Gun Nut at some point as well but so far I've been able to put together some decent weapons that I can't craft from salvaging loot.  I'd say so far Gun Nut looks the most promising to me of the crafting skills though and will likely be the one I take first.

Agility I'd like to work my way up to Ninja eventually... I mean who doesn't want to be a Ninja!

Luck annoys me.  It's a whole tree of random stuff and I dislike my build depending on random chance.  If ammo becomes scarce (it hasn't yet) I may take Scrounger but otherwise I likely won't touch this or it's perks.

Dark Tower fan?

My guy's Roland too, and also favoring PER and AGI. Didn't do much planning and I take perks almost impulsively. Starting to wish I'd focused less on settlements and more on combat and infiltration. Settlement building in unpatched vanilla is not very good. I'm sure in a year it will be another story. But I'm not the Minecraft type anyway. Rather VATS raiders in the face with a trusty pistol.

Oh, yea. I've been a Dark Tower fan from the first novel.

I'm on character 13 at the moment. I made the same decision you did: screw settlements for now. I'm running a melee asshat who isn't out to make any friends. hehe

I followed the same "rule" for Perception as my above build, but this guy is all about the up-close-and-personal melee bashing. Here's the build and a backstory summary; I'm thinking of doing some Fan Fiction with him.

<Insert Movie Voice here>

He woke up to a world ruled by violence and wicked men. But for all its darkness, the Wasteland still had rules; had sides to be chosen.

He didn't care. Someone killed his wife and stole his child, and until he knew the truth everyone was guilty. Everyone would pay.

They called him Fury, a man loyal only to his anger.

    • I am low-key enjoying the new start menu of 25H2 build. Looks like the management team who shoved the Recommended Section down our throats up till now got fired in recent gommage at MS. Also loving the 6Ghz Hotspot feature. I only enabled these 2 features and I am happy. I keep an eye on MDL forums for 26200.xxxx updates once a week to stay up to date manually. I downloaded the latest build from https://uupdump.net selected Dev Channel tab and downloaded amd64 build. Let the script ripp. Then I used vivetool to enable the above 2 features • 25H2 New Start Menu ViVeTool.exe /enable /id:47205210,49221331,49381526,49402389,49820095,55495322,48433719 • Enable Wifi 6Ghz Hotspot ViVeTool.exe /enable /id:40466470,48433719 Reboot and enjoy. Almost all the above info was provided by Neowin at some point.
    • Indeed, I do think its sad in some ways a corporation can never be content with "performing well across every metric" and having over £59 billion cash on hand.
    • They've been focusing on security and quality? Could have fooled me. Their own paying customers literally just got breached because they failed to push SharePoint updates downstream to on prem servers operating outside of their "365" ecosystem.
    • The animosity is unnecessary, when I opened the page I only saw one response which never mentioned your other steps, and when I hit reply it jumped straight to the bottom and again, I saw no other responses.  I was simply agreeing with the first comment that said yes, you should be fine if you erase its current operating system. Using another PC, or the copy of Windows that comes on that PC (former option is more trustworthy), download and run the Windows Media Creation tool.  It will walk you thru the process of downloading Windows and writing it to a USB stick.  It will even ask you at one point whether you're reinstalling it to the current machine or installing it on another machine. Then just boot the PC in question from that USB stick.  Usually spamming Esc, Del, F-8, F-9, F-10, F-11, F-12 or F-2 immediately after power on will bring up a boot menu, it varies by manufacturer.  If Windows starts booting you either missed your window or hit the wrong key. Follow the on-screen instructions.  When it gets to the disk formatting part I usually just delete all the partitions on the destination drive, then select the unpartitioned space as my destination.  The Windows installer will then automatically partition the drive as needed. Be prepared to download drivers from the PC manufacturer's website, they may not come bundled with Windows and you may not be able to use things like WiFi or ethernet until you have them.  They "might" work straight away, but they also might not.  Better to be prepared with a spare PC and a USB stick to transfer them over.
