Cannot add ppa: 'no json object could be decoded'. linux mint 17.2

I am on Linux Mint 17.2 (Cinnamon as DE) (with kernel 4.2.0.18 installed and loaded) and I'm getting this message when trying to add a PPA via the terminal: Cannot add ppa: 'no json object could be decoded'. What is the cause and what is the fix?

what repo are you trying to add? usually get that if it does not exist

Trying to install vlc 2.2.1 (which I have before), retro-arch, and (I think) some other programs (can't recall at the moment).

do you have the right PPA?

 

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc
