Cheapest way to get Windows 10?

Recommended Posts

I know Microsoft was giving it away for free at some point, I'm guessing i'm too late to the party?

Are there any cheap ways to grab it currently, what is the cheapest method?

I once bought a Windows 8 licence off eBay and several months later it was marked as counterfeit :(

I just built a new rig and am sticking with 7 for now. I was considering going straight to 10 but, feel free to call me a skeptic, I'd prefer to hold off til the last minute for a free upgrade (or purchase (either 7 or 8) and upgrade) just to let more potential flaws to be fleshed out you know? New software has a certain appeal but there are also certain drawbacks.

Sorry I should have pointed out I do not have a Windows licence currently.

Would it be cheaper to buy Windows 7 then go to 10 for free?

I actually have a few Windows 7 Home Basic keys that have never been used.  If you you are interested in one (free of charge) PM me.  You can use it to install Windows 10 Home; all you would need is the installation ISO.

Are you a student or related to any academic institution?

No, but my sister is at University in the UK, would that entitle her to a cheaper/free version?

Please do not post sites that violate Microsoft's licensing terms or sell pirated or illegal software. Windows 10 (or other Windows products) are only legitimately sold by Microsoft or its designated retail outlets.

Windows 7 and 8 licenses can be purchased legally for about half the price from middle-men who buy them from individuals and companies who bought large numbers of them and ended up not needing some of them. Naturally, Microsoft sued them, but to no avail. The conclusion of the whole trial was that if you purchase a license and have not yet activated it, you're free to sell it as you please. Kinda like when you buy a PC game, don't open it and end up selling it to someone else.

I have 4 more keys to give away, if anybody wants them.  First come, first serve.  I will respond in the order I receive the PMs.  Remember, this is a Windows 7 Home Basic key.  You need a Windows 7 Home Basic or a Windows 10 Home ISO to install it (and if you start with Windows 10 you need the latest ISO; a RTM (10240) ISO will not take an upgrade key.  If you are already running some version of Windows you should be able to use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to download the ISO.  I will be busy the next couple of days since it is Christmas, so I may not respond immediately.

Does this exclude the downloadable version from the MS site? (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO)

I've done the upgrade from Win 7 Home Basic but having some issues with Boot Camp so i'd like to try a clean Win 10 install, i just can't figure out which ISO I need.

Can't you just become a Windows 10 insider and get it for free like most other people?

Easiest way. The only downside is that most builds have a watermark on the bottom-right corner unless it's an officially released build to all Windows 10. Install the Insider and set to Slow Ring, and you're good to go. And if a new build causes problems, then you can always revert pretty quickly.

May depend on what version of Bootcamp you're using. I dont think the later versions support 32 bit?

Should be the latest version I am on El Capitan.

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
