Goodbye SlySoft Inc, AnyDVD

Question

Hi all,

I was going to update AnyDVD HD from 7.6.8.0 to 7.6.9.0 by going to slysoft.com only to be greeted by this message;

Due to recent regulatory requirements we have had to cease all activities relating to SlySoft Inc.
We wish to thank our loyal customers/clients for their patronage over the years.

Kinda sad since people (I know not all...) but some used their softwares for genuine reasons, and legally. I'm using AnyDVD HD to backup every Blu-ray that I have on my server and use Plex instead. Any recommendations for a replacement?

Best regards,

Tommy

Well, that is a bummer.  I never used AnyDVD (because MakeMKV fits my needs just fine) ... but still (as Eric said) banning something that makes you have the actual physical disc is a shame.  I buy a Blu-ray ... rip it to my HTPC ... and instead of having to go through all the menus, waiting for the Blu-ray to load, etc., the movie just plays.  Much quicker than playing the actual physical disc.  Shame really.

Hopefully they will not go after MakeMKV ... though I fear they will and they aren't as "powerful" as Slysoft was.

This action against Slysoft will not help or hinder pirates.

TorrentFreak has an article about this.

POPULAR BLU-RAY RIPPING SOFTWARE SHUTS DOWN FOLLOWING LEGAL PRESSURE

The Antigua-based software company SlySoft has shut down its website and ceased sales of the popular Blu-ray ripping software AnyDVD. The action comes several days after a group of Hollywood studios and technology partners asked the U.S. Government to intervene.

Earlier this month AACS LA, the decryption licensing outfit founded by a group of movie studios and technology partners including Warner Bros, Disney, Microsoft and Intel, reminded the U.S. Government about the unauthorized activities of SlySoft.

SlySoft is known for selling various copyright protection circumvention tools including the popular AnyDVD software, of which it sold tens of thousands of copies over the years.

I'll try MakeMKV, thanks jjkusaf. I was using AnyDVD and Handbrake combination. I didn't want to buy digital files on services like iTunes or whatever people use. I'm concern about the DRM and liability on a long term about those services. I feel like buying DVDs and Blu-rays is cheaper (I always buy them at 5$CAD max.) and it provides me with a backup solution in case that my server dies. I had the lifetime licence for AnyDVD, i guess I've reach one's lifetime.

is it because the software stripped out the encryption?  If the ripper rips with encryption intact this should be OK for personal use, right?

afaik here in the US the Gub doesnt want you doing any sort of backup process. You own the disc, keep it on the disc.

It's absolute nonsense that you arent allowed to do what you want with a disc that you purchased with zero intent to distribute.

Bingo!

If no backup and the disc gets broken by kids... how we watch movie?

Forget that, I prefer back them up in case discs get broken or are unreadable.

If it was me, the kids use the backup discs to watch kids rated movies..   when the kids get older, then I give them the discs so they could have their own kids someday ..

That's why my movies are stored in the media box that kids can't touch it.  If family movie time is up, then I can stream movie for all of us.

Kids use backup discs as long as they know what they are doing with the player.

    • Mac does nothing of the sort. You can change the default browser very easily it does not nag you and when you do this, it does not open something still in Safari....like Windows does with Edge.
    • I do not remember anything happening to Apple and Google for bribing people not to make Apps for Windows Phone. Edge barley has a foot print to matter. If the other browser companies want more of the Pie, they need to do better. I use Brave on all my personal device. However in industry, Edge of default, as we can manage it easier with MS tools.
    • On the one hand, it shouldn't be difficult. You buy a computer, you decide what OS you want, which browser etc. Simple enough. But that's the techie side of things. My sister, my mother, wouldn't bother with such a thought. And I'm pretty sure that if you presented a window asking them what to pick they would say, "I don't care! I just want to access my Email!"
