I think these generation cycles should last around 5-8yrs personally...

I guess Windows 10, allows MS to veer off the path of tradition, when it comes to console launches and such...

If Microsoft goes nuts with a newer (much more powerful) Xbox, I think it will be for enthusiast only (like the Xbox Elite Controller)...

That will probably be in the $500-$600 range...

This thing will NOT be mass produced at a high level like people think...  well not initially at least...

I bet if enough people take an interest, they will. they will go with the $$$

Not really, it's still a PS4. If a PS5 comes out late 2018 it's counted the years from when the PS4 launched. 2013, so 5.

It'll be 2018 or 2019. It'll depend on when the next big jump for console internals can be done and for a decent price.

That's just twisting things through marketing speak though, it's just a PS4 because they call it a PS4 but we're talking more of a jump in performance if the 4.5 teraflops number holds true compared to the current 1.8, we're looking at a new system that just happens to be compatible with games, not to mention if it goes on sale with the same original $400 price tag, how can people not think of it as a new system and not just a minor upgrade?   And then you also expect fans to buy it, because gamers want the best, and then 2 years later you expect them to drop another $400, if not more, on the PS5?   I don't think most people will be nice as you and look at it as you said.

wow, with those numbers, this Xboxone CPU is going to be a beast

Put your tongue back in your mouth, in 2017/8 GPU/s will be double the X1's GPU flop count. The 1080 is already 9TF and it alone costs $599.

The floating point of the CPU is not comparable to the GPU. Why you asked for one or why an answer was even provided, I'm not sure. Even the latest Skylakes are not in TFs. CPU power means diddly squat for the most part compared to GPU power.

its just all this tech talk about teraflops turns me on

We'll see how the PS Neo sells. It will somewhat set a precedent for how quickly console revisions can and will be churned out.

The market always speaks.

5-8 years is stupid as ###### though. Computing and gaming technologies improve significantly year to year. I mean look how far we've come from the day the current gen consoles released to today. If this rumor turns out to be true then 4 years between releases is really not that bad especially when these devices aren't really that expensive compared to what it costs to build a new computer every 4 years.

To all of you who say "well if you care about graphics get a PC" keep in mind that a huge chunk of games are just console ports so if we're expected to stick with the ps4 and xbox one for 8 years our PC games are going to start looking pretty ###### as the months go by.

There has to be a balance between us day 1 adopters and the casual gamers.

Introducing new hardware at accelerated pace can potentially push lil Timmy's parents/grand parents away because the Walmart rep wont have the slightest clue about what their selling.

Considering the last 3-4 years has had very little changed in terms of hardware, I think this generation was just badly timed.

this image comes to mind (old maxell advertisement from the 1980's)

This article is referring to the GPU .. not the CPU.

Honestly I'd prefer they not split the userbase over a few pixels on screen, but that's me. May as well just make this the Xbox 2.

Is it really splitting the user base if both One and Scorpio can play the same games? UWP games should "easily" allow them to scale from Xbox One to Scorpio to PCs. They are trying to blur the line between PCs and Console (in terms of software at least) with Windows 10 and UWP. I guess Sony is aiming for same with PS4k (and beyond?).

It splits the userbase if some games can only be run on the newer iteration of the console. It could be possible that these games are made to downscale for older systems, but a lot of gamers will feel cheated by that.

Important part not in the first post

Not going to do much against the Neo in the short term given it'll be a year+ after (Neo is said to be Sep/Oct 2016). By 2018 you'll probably see a PS5 so it'll be swings and roundabouts from here on in.

its not a given neo is coming in 2016. i dont know if youve seen this, it could be bs, but he nailed the NMS delay a day before kotaku first reported it.

I can imagine both of them trying to hold off as long as they can to see what the other is going to do so they can one up each with the hardware.   That said though, it's about who has the money and feels like they can spend more and take a bigger hit, for me that's always been MS.   Sony can ride the PS4 success and feel like they can take the hit on the neo, come in at the rumored 4.2 teraflops for $400, but if MS can do 6 teraflops for $400 and they're release dates aren't too far apart then I can see people just waiting it out for the more powerful of the two.

At this point, I think Sony can wait longer though, they're selling fine, they're not in a need to rush out unless the need is for the hardware to push their new VR, which is probably why both companies are doing this.    So if PSVR is the goal for Sony then they're not going to wait too long either, out of necessity.    MS doesn't have it's own VR device, but if the rumor about a deal with Oculus is true and the Scorpio can support the Rift, then it's no real surprise the target performance is that high.

I'll go with the leaked documents about Neo mode being needed from October and the insiders on GAF saying this year, but yeah I'll accept nothing is a given until Sony announce it.

NMS was obvious as stores received this days ago http://kotaku.com/sources-no-mans-sky-delayed-1778797365

dont the docs also say its ok to ship the titles before the hardware? only reason im skeptical is because they'll also have another similar priced product, the psvr. a lot of people will have to choose one or the other and it could be bad news for the adoption of psvr. of course now that we know about the scorpio rumors, even if they werent on planning to lauch the neo in 2016, they might feel that they're kinda forced to. we'll see

I work in retail and meet with Sony reps -- they aren't told anything on Neo at all.  Not even a can't confirm or deny, they know nothing aside from the same rumors we read.

Well we don't have an exact date for the hardware (Sep/Oct are best guesses). The docs said something along the lines of games released in September must get a Neo patch, and games released from October must have a Neo mode as standard. There was a joke about FF15 coming out in September so Square could manage to avoid day 1 Neo requirement and put out a patch later. As Square enjoy taking their time.

    • I think it depends on what you're looking for to do, and the time you have to spare. With my Dwarf 3, I easily spend 3-4 hour sessions; half an hour driving to an un-light polluted place, another half hour unpacking and setting up the smart scope + tripod for equatorial tracking, then 15 more minutes mucking around with settings and shooting calibration frames, spending a few hours shooting, merging with past photo sessions, etc. It's crazy how time flies and I often get home later than I expected. It's something I still need to set aside a good part of an evening to do, all in all. For one session, where you often need like four for best results when it comes to deep space objects. Even with a smart scope like Dwarf 3, regular non-astro photography is still way more approachable to people getting into photography. I find this is a time consuming niche no matter how I go about it. With practice, I can probably begin cutting time here but I think where smart scopes find their home is among people who love to shoot the night sky but don't have the spare time to go deep with the "navigator level" attunement to the night sky itself in addition to everything else. Having said this, _if_ you have even more time to spend on this hobby, it will probably be even more rewarding to do it more by hand and learn the skies and the details of how it all works.

    • Dell, HP PCs ran into endless reboot, BitLocker recovery loops but Windows 11 isn't to blame by Sayan Sen Last month Neowin reported on a major issue on Dell systems wherein a bug in its official support tool was leading to endless blue screen of death (BSOD) and restarts. Following our report, Dell officially acknowledged its SupportAssist-related crash issue, confirming that the culprit is not Microsoft's operating system but rather a faulty version of its own remediation software. In a newly published support advisory, Dell stated that version 5.5.16.0 of Dell SupportAssist Remediation and Alienware SupportAssist Remediation can trigger blue screen errors and unexpected system restarts. The company notes that the problematic component operates independently of the main SupportAssist application, meaning users should not remove the primary SupportAssist software when troubleshooting the issue. According to Dell, the crashes are linked specifically to the SupportAssist Remediation service, which is bundled with SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, and as such it has since released an updated version, 5.5.16.1, which is said to resolve the problem. Affected users are advised to first verify whether version 5.5.16.0 is installed by checking the Installed Apps section in Windows Settings. If so, Dell recommends updating SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools through either SupportAssist's "Update Software" feature or Dell Command Update. Dell also advises users to back up important data before performing the update and to ensure systems remain connected to power throughout the installation process. If you are still having issues though make sure to report to the Dell support forum. As it turns out though Dell is not the only PC maker currently dealing with update-related headaches as HP is also facing a separate but probably equally frustrating issue involving recent Windows Secure Boot updates that were released with recent Windows 11 Patch Tuesdays. Similar to Dell, HP also put up its own support article where it explains the issue. The company says that affected devices could hit a brick wall when booting as they run into a BitLocker recovery loop after the April 2026 updates. The problem appears to affect systems wherein the new UEFI Secure Boot CA 2023 certificates fail to apply properly. As such affected users will find themselves entering their recovery key over and over again despite the system otherwise functioning normally. HP says such PCs should be updated to the latest available BIOS version and configured with the necessary Secure Boot certificates before installing Microsoft's Windows 11 Patch Tuesday updates. Systems that are already experiencing the problem may require BIOS configuration changes to restore normal boot behavior. Admins can find information regarding that in the support article here on HP's official website.

    • If its the devs fault you would think Unreal would help M$ take full advantage of Unreal and work with them to fix the performance issues. Otherwise they are catching unwarranted bad press.
