Using Windows 7 OEM licenese to clean install Windows 10 on a new computer

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone

A friend of mine has an old laptop which he doesn't use and has Windows 7 installed (probably OEM)

He wants to install Windows 10 on his desktop (currently running Vista)

Is it possible doing so using the Windows 7 license key? (From what I've read, you can use Windows 7 keys to activate Windows 10, but I dunno about pre-installed versions)

Hi Korosanbo :) Welcome to Neowin.

He would have to process the online upgrade first to W10, then clean reset and viola W10 activated on digital entitlement. After thats set, he can clean install the old way, but no real benefit when you can full reset W10 back to factory anyway.

Starting with the November update, Windows 10 (Version 1511) can be activated using some Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 product keys. For more info, see the section Activating Windows 10 (Version 1511 or higher) using a Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 product key in this topic.

But......

OEM software is licensed with the computer system on which it was originally installed and is tied to that original machine. OEM licenses are single-use licenses that cannot be installed on more than one computer system, even if the original machine is no longer in use.
