Outlook.com upgrades, Windows Live Mail 2012 & Thunderbird

Question

As a Windows 7 user - with the impending 'upgrade' of outlook.com, and the closing of access to Hotmail, Outlook & Live.com addresses via Windows Live Main 2012, what other options do we have for using an email client with these email services?

Microsoft did issue an update for Windows Live Mail 2012, however this has now been pulled, and from what I read, the update did more damage to the email client than it was worth installing.

I received an email from Microsoft inviting me to a free trial of Outlook 2016, however credit card details required for the free offer, so they can keep it.

Does anyone know if Mozilla Thunderbird may be an alternative with Hotmail or Outlook after the upgrades, or has this client's access been shut out too?

Thunderbird works with Outlook.com through IMAP, if only because Windows Mail itself under Windows 10 only supports IMAP. Those settings still work: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/oemail-osend/how-to-set-up-thunderbird-to-sync-your-outlookcom/266ddd8f-250c-4e8a-9799-009d992be8e3?auth=1
