External HDD enclosure giving me tons of errors

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've recently bought a USB 3 enclosure and ever since I connect it to my main computer, it is giving me errors in the event viewer and I can't transfer files (sometimes I can, but big files are no go). I've tried multiple HD and the same happens. I've tried the enclosure on another computer and it's working fine, so I'm puzzled. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z170X UD5. Switching port does nothing. I've tried a fresh install of windows 10, nothing.

The errors in event viewer are:

id: 51 source: disk     An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR4 during a paging operation.

id: 129 source: UASPStor     Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort5, was issued.

id: 140 source: Ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs)       The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: E:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume14.
({Device Timeout}
The specified I/O operation on %hs was not completed before the time-out period expired.)

id: 153 source: disk       The IO operation at logical block address 0x5e9368 for Disk 2 (PDO name: \Device\00000078) was retried.

Anybody has an idea what's going on?

The drives are working perfectly and the enclosure is brand new.

New doesn't always mean good/working. Sometimes electronics will pass QA but fail when you try and use them. I noticed you said it works fine on another computer, can you compare the drivers from that computer to the one it has errors on?

Have you installed the newest chipset software?

intel - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20775/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-INF-Update-Utility-?product=1145

it seems the usb 3 is handled by an intel controller, try updating the chipset and if it still happens give us the hardware id string and i can find newer usb drivers if there are any.

It might be able to detect it, but can't transfer data.

I have installed the chipset drivers in the past; just reinstalled with the -OVERALL command and it did nothing. I don't even know if there is a Intel USB 3 driver.

There is definitely something with the driver as I just tested it with the USB 2 port and everything works normally.

go into device manager and see if the controller shows up:

in search type devmgmt.msc

when device manager opens, at the bottom double click Universal Serial Bus Controllers

it will expand and there is probably one entry labeled Intel 3.0

Right click that entry and select properties

In the new window click the details tab

On this new window, click the drop down section and select Hardware ID

Right click the first entry, select copy and paste the string here.

Getting conflicting reports of what chipset this uses. Check the vendor/device ID of the enclosure. If it's jMicron, send it back. They're junk.

I bought an Akasa dock years ago with a jMicron chipset and it never worked reliably over 3.0, only 2.0. Bought a cheaper Inateck one with ASMedia and it's worked flawlessly.

Jmicron controllers are the cheapest nastiest pieces of crap you could ever have the misfortune of having on a device

your mobo has an USB 3.1 port that red have you tried that one

Yes, it's a jMicron, damn. Which model would you recommend?
