Using a /32 network on Debian 8u3

I have a Debian 8u3 virtual machine (web server running plesk not that that is relevant) hosted on a dedicate server at a DC

 

the DC give you single IP addresses rather than IPv4 sub nets, and they ask you to assign them to a mac address in your control panel and then assign that mac address on the VM Host to the guest, which I have done.

 

You then configure the IP address on the guest, for example (not actual IP btw) 176.48.3.78

 

They then tell you to configure a sub net mask of 255.255.255.255 (/32) and use your servers IP address but with .1 on the end as the gateway.  

Lets say my servers address is 176.48.15.78 (again not the actual IP, just an example) then the default gateway to be used on the VM should be 176.48.15.1

 

Debian isn't happy with this at all during setup ,how can it route via a default gateway not even on the same sub net as itself.

If I configure it with the net mask 255.255.0.0 it works, however all IP's inside of 176.48.15 will not be able to route to it, not ideal at all but it worked.

 

The problem is I have upgraded my dedicated server int he DC (and have 8 days to migrate everything) and its IP address is now (another example) completely different 189.65.48.30 so the default gateway on the Debian VM needs to be 89.65.48.1

There is no way to shorten the sub net mask to allow Debian to route now.

 

If I configure in windows an IP address a net mask of 255.255.255.255 and a gateway nowhere even close to the IP address it gives a warning, but if I dismiss this warning it works and routes as online.net suggest it will.

 

In Debian if I edit /etc/network/interfaces in a similar way and save it, then reboot the server, it cannot ping out or accept any traffic in at all.

 

How can I make it route like window sis able to ??

Still struggling on this, I thought I had cracked it because my web server now works fine pages load, email clients can connect, everything works as expected.

 

until the server tries to connect outwards itself, any time plesk tries to update, or osticket tries to connect to an external email service, or anything like that it cannot

 

I cant even ping from the console

I tried adding various routes and couldn't cure the problem.  can anyone point me the right way ?

So I made progress

However I can only communicate with traffic on 8.0.0.1 to 8.254.254.254

 

Do i have to manually add routes for every subnet outside of the one asigned to eth0 ? 

 

Also is the re a way to have these routes saved so they remain after a reboot ?

I figured it out

 

ip route del default (remove the deult rule)

 

ip route add default via 62.xxx.xxx.1 src 163.xxx.xxx.xxx (add it back but with the failover IP as source)

 

I added those 2 lines to /etc/rc.local

 

fixed.png

 

wow i jumped through hoops to figure that out, quite a learning curve.  I now know more about Linux routing than i ever did

      ChromeOS M137 goes stable, bringing new Face Control policy and more by David Uzondu Google has brought ChromeOS M137 to the stable channel, and it includes a few focused updates for users and IT admins. A key change is a new policy for managing big groups of Chromebooks. The face control accessibility tool, which Google also updated back in ChromeOS M135, now gets a vital control for managers. A new policy called FaceGazeEnabled lets them switch the feature on or off across a whole school or company. The update also brings a new audio feature called crosstalk cancellation. It aims to create a better sound experience using just the Chromebook's built-in speakers. The software processes audio to make it seem like it is surrounding your head, not just coming from two small points. This tries to copy the feel of a surround sound system or good headphones. Any audio gets a boost, but you will notice it most when watching movies or playing games with directional sound. More accessibility tools have arrived, too. ChromeVox now has a direct keyboard shortcut, Search + O + C, that displays spoken text as braille captions on a connected display. For the poor souls in IT, troubleshooting got a little less painful as well. A new event-based log collection system, when enabled by an admin, will automatically upload relevant logs when something specific fails, like an OS crash or a botched update. Instead of digging through mountains of data, administrators get targeted reports sent straight to them. Here's how to enable it: Turn on the Device system log upload setting. Turn on OS update status reporting—For the Report device OS information setting, select OS update status. Turn on device telemetry reporting on crash information—For the Report device telemetry setting, select Crash information. Google also keeps things sane by limiting these targeted uploads to just twice a day per device. As usual, the update is rolling out slowly. If you do not see ChromeOS M137 for your machine yet, just be patient. This phased release lets Google find and address any issues before the update gets to everyone.

      Totally different vehicles. Uber has partnered with Waymo for level 5 autonomous vehicles. Waymo has completed 10 million trips and to date, there have been 696 accidents in 4 years and of those 16 of them appear to have been due to an error by the car. In total airbags have only been deployed 38 times. The technology should always be under review and continued to be improved on, but this is a totally different animal to Tesla FSD PS. no I don't work for them etc. I am an analyst for a market intelligence firm and we have a lot of interest from clients looking at the connected car space for advertising etc. so I have studied them

      But it's not full self driving it's level 2 autonomy. Audi, BMW and Mercedes all have level 3 and make far less noise about it

      Edge for Business gets secure password deployment for organizations by Paul Hill Microsoft Edge for Business now offers organizations secure password deployments as a generally available feature, the Redmond giant said. Instead of users sharing passwords on sticky notes or via email to access certain websites or tools, admins can deploy encrypted shared passwords to specific users within their organization. When a user receives a password, it is stored in their Edge password manager and can be used to log into websites seamlessly using autofill. Microsoft has made this enterprise-grade solution available to customers at no additional cost. How it works and the user experience Administrators have to manage the feature via the Microsoft Edge management service within the Microsoft 365 admin center. From there, they can add, update, and revoke credentials for specific user groups through configuration policies. Once an admin has set it up and shared passwords with users, the users will see the passwords in their Edge password manager and can be used with autofill on corresponding websites. The passwords are tied to work profiles in Edge on managed Windows devices to limit their misuse. Further boosting security, the shared passwords cannot actually be viewed, edited, or deleted (unless the website allows), or exported from the password manager.
