The Struggles with Learning New Things

Recommended Posts

Well, as the title says, there are struggles with learning new things. Here's how this all began..

Over the past 3 years I've worked with a group to re-encode and release anime, the goal was quality but small sizes, which we achieve. They used a craptastic shared hosting service called "ipage.com". When it takes you 15s to 60s to login to wordpress admin panel, you know you've got a problem. When you open the php.ini for your shared hosting package, and see the "max_memory_limit" set to 32, it scares you a little.

A week ago I purchased a vps through blazingfast.io, at first i struggled with the AMP part of LAMP. Only to find out that the specific iso I chose, came pre-installed with AMP, you just needed to update first for it to work. (3 days to figure that out.) After that, I successfully backed up, and moved the site. Well, phpmyadmin had a fit with the size of the database. I was thinking 4.5mb, not bad for 5 years of operations or so I thought. 200k items in the database table, took a few hours to handle that. Figuring out that, took my friend and I several hours. He eventually figured out that it was actually importing, but slowly. 500 items per 5 minutes or so. After that was finished, I uploaded the remaining php files and the core of the site.

Well, the website worked. I could login, move around, a few plugins needed updating, so I tried too. NOPE! Didn't work. Spent a few hours Googling, tried the suggestions of changing permissions to 0755 or 0777, none of that worked. Now you web gurus are thinking "WTF?! 777?! ARE YOU INSANE?!", don't worry, I changed those back after they didn't work for me. I found a website that explained exactly what was happening, root had ownership of my www folder. My apache "nobody" account didn't. I fixed several problems by chowning my ownership to my Apache2 daemon.

I learned a lot from this. It took me two weeks of messing around with things to get it to work, and in that time, I learned that grep is my friend and that ownership is 9/10ths of the law :p Oh and I hate vi, with a passion.

Moral of the Story: No matter how long it takes you, or how much you struggle, knowing you did your best and you succeeded makes the time and struggle look like nothing.

It could be worse. You could always use Emacs :woot:

... but in all seriousness have you tried the MS Code editor? It is available for Linux as well. I use it on Windows

Eh, I'm not fond of it. I use brackets for web development. The live preview feature is pretty sweet.
