Every PlayStation 4 to be made HDR capable via a patch

By Oli Welsh Published 07/09/2016

The focus at Sony's PlayStation Meeting event in New York is on PlayStation 4 Pro, but it's not the only Sony console that will be able to use the capabilities of the latest TV sets.

At the event, PlayStation boss Andrew House revealed that all PS4s will gain the ability to support the High Dynamic Range (HDR) colour capabilities of some UHD, or 4K, TVs. HDR support will be added to PS4 via a system update next week.

Previously, the only console with HDR capabilities has been the recently released Xbox One S from Microsoft. It can play UHD Blu-ray discs, which use HDR, and HDR is coming to some games, including this month's Forza Horizon 3.

Does 4.0 have a public release date yet?

"Next week"

When the Slim launches the HDR update is coming as part of 4.0 (although this isn't in the beta).

Oh nice, just need to buy myself a new shiny HDR TV. Although i'm still holding out for a good gaming 65" set with the holy trinity of HDR OLED 4k.

To answer my own question - No Microsoft won't be adding HDR to the original Xbox One as it only has HDMI 1.4a whereas it looks like Sony sneaked in an HDMI2.0a compatible controller even though it wasn't finalised when the PS4 originally came out. So with a firmware update they can make that compatible controller a compliant one and support HDR. Interestingly that also means it can technically do 4K as well if Sony decide to add that in the future. Obviously it can't do 4K games but it may be possible to do 4K video content which would be interesting with their PlayStation Vue service

Just so people know, the Pro doesn't need a different software update. Sony just told me it uses the 4.05 PS4 one, so those of you who are putting another HDD into the Pro when it arrives, just grab the FULL image from here:

    • draw.io Desktop 30.2.6 by Razvan Serea draw.io desktop is a downloadable security-first diagramming application that runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux. Creating diagrams in the desktop app doesn’t need an internet connection. This is useful when you are disconnected or when you must create diagrams in a highly secure environment, where data protection is of the utmost importance. When you use the draw.io desktop app, your diagrams will be stored on your local device. Because this is a stand-alone application, also designed to run offline, there are no interfaces to cloud storage platforms available. Of course, you can still store your diagrams in folders that are synchronised to your cloud storage if you wish. Easy-to-use diagram editor The draw.io apps work just like the office and drawing tools you are used to using. Drag and drop shapes from the shape libraries and drag to draw connectors between them. Drag connectors to add waypoints and set a precise shape and position, or let them reroute automatically. Double click and start typing to add a label to anything. Create tables and swimlane flows with a familiar tool. Style shapes and connectors with customisable palettes, sketch options, fonts and text formatting tools. Search for shapes, including in open-source icon libraries. Use our vast libraries of shapes and templates, organised into logical categories, to create a range of diagrams and infographics. Generate diagrams from text descriptions using our smart templates. Diagram faster with keyboard shortcuts. draw.io Desktop 30.2.6 changelog: Uses electron 42.5.0 #2452 Updates to draw.io core 30.2.6.
