Welcome to the Servers 2017 thread!
 
If you want to show your fellow Neowinians what your server looks like, this is the place to do it.
 
When posting, please note the following:
If you plan to img-embed your picture, please try to keep it under 100k. Actually, it's best if you just link to it externally.
If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.
The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary in order that they will comply with the Community Rules.
 
The Servers 2017 thread is not to be used as a means to post images of a pornographic or otherwise provocative nature, so please be mindful of the images that may appear on your desktop. Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.

Baby steps while under lockdown, basically this is my 25u rack, two brush panels, a 24 port keystone patch panel and a Unifi non-poe switch. Also a Philips Hue. Laptop is just on the shelf for storage at present and isnt turned on.

 

The rest of the setup is a Unifi USG, Unifi wifi AP, my Unraid server and my little WD Pro Nas which is elsewhere on the forum. My modem is a Vigor 130, things are spread around the house as currently working from home but once Im back in the office Ill throw everything in the rack and store it in the spare room.

 

Im loving Unraid! I have Docker containers set up with the unifi controller, Plex, Tramission and Nextcloud, as well as PiHole. One VM for linux and one for MacinaBox Catalina. Box is my 4770k Freenas repurposed just because Freenas was getting pissy with Plex and drive sharing, Ive literally had zero problems since switching to Unraid. Im currently using the trial but Ill be purchasing the beginner licence when it forces me to do so in a few weeks time.

 

I dont really have any need to do anything else at the moment, wifi is great with the unifi access point, no dropouts, everything is really stable. Some of these cables are placeholders, and Ive retired my Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi Zero (they were running the unifi controller and pihole respectively) so I can fiddle with those when I get bored. The next big upgrade will be upgrading my Unraid box from the 4c/8t 4470k, probably to a Ryzen system with 8c/16t. Ive currently got 3 4tb drives in the server and one 120gb SSD for cache, one of the 4tb is for parity but I really want to add a second parity drive next month. After that it will probably remain pretty static until the rebuild. 

 

I'm enjoying playing with docker containers and wifi guest setups, need to have a look at vlans and other nerdy bits just to sate my appetite, but its solid, quiet and hopefully not too bad power wise from what I've been monitoring :)

The same reason you run anything in a VM. No other physical hardware to run it on and to isolate it from your host OS.

I have entire build environments that are not easily replicated in VMs. I can then backup the vhd and transfer it anywhere. The servers are no different. I have web and sql server VMs. Easy to back up, easy to transfer, doesn’t require me to install a bunch of garbage on my workstation OS to use what they offer.

Sure, so this is my personal setup for home use. With that in mind, keeping them all as VM's makes backing up and isolating vms in the environment easy. They are all contained in the datastore and I replicate copies offsite and to AWS using Veeam personal edition on the host machine. I run a Windows AD domain in the vm environment for ease of user account management, windows updates, security policies, etc. That is the reason for the Windows Server VMs. The other ones are below:

 

- The Windows clients are used for site to site connection with seedbox/torrents/downloads

- One Ubuntu runs my Plex media server with the actual media (Movies/TV) files hosted in Google Drive

- Another Ubuntu runs a dedicated OpenVPN server for my remote access. It tunnels all traffic back to my home internet connection in cases where I'm travelling and using public wifi (lol 2020).

- Wormhole is a pihole for DNS

 

The Storage server VM, RDP, pihole and plex are the only ones that have connectivity to my home internal network so it can publish cifs from a physical NAS to the vms and stream to TV's and provide various network services for my home.

Unifi UDM Pro, 16 port switch, and 10GB switch, two G3 Elitedesks (small form factor and mini), printer because my work still sucks, and a camera there for 'security'. My unraid server at the bottom, and a WD PR4100 at the back just chiling. It's good to have your own space!

My server rack. I'm a new creator trying to build a platform. It's a bit sparse but this hosts everything at https://status.sysadminafterdark.com as well as some internal services such as a pair of domain controllers and a SCCM lab for work as it's my baby and the help desk gets cranky whenever a bunk image is pushed. I'm currently gearing up for a 10gb upgrade. I will make some videos soon, just trying to get rid of this bronchitis at the moment.

      I'd say the first one failed to be as popular as Apple anticipated, but the easy adjustment here is to make fewer of them next time around. It would only be a "flop" if it isn't possible for Apple to recover the design and factory tooling costs given the number of units sold, which I doubt would be the case. It isn't like no one bought them; it just failed to become the new hot phone of the year.

      You're right that it does not follow the plain meaning of the word, but in this context, it is a legal term defined in 49 U.S.C. Kind of how "wire fraud" laws apply even if a physical wire was not used. Given that it is codified in law, and it isn't just automotive journalists that don't understand evolving technology, I highly doubt congress would change a well understood term just because technology makes the term slightly less actuate.

      This is exactly why I keep saying we are not ready for human free self-driving. These little "bugs" are may seem like random one-offs. There was also the Waymo that drove between police with drawn weapons and the suspect they were pointing them at. From a software perspective it is easy to understand how those extremely rare situations may not have been programed for, but that is the point. If AI needs to be told to watch out for every possible contingency, then it can never be successful. There will always be the possibility of a first encounter that the AI needs to understand to avoid.
