Problem With ABC (BitTorrent) Freezing

Question

I have used ABC for over 3 months now, and ever since the beginning, it randomly freezes my PC (including mouse/sound/keyboard etc.) for 5/10 seconds at a time, then everything is back to normal for 5/10 seconds then it freezes again. Only when you close all open programs (Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, MSN Messenger, ABC etc.) does it stop freezing, but then the Internet stops working (i.e. after the first freeze occurs, then no program can access the Internet). Only a restart works. My system/software specifications are below:

ABC v2.6.1 (using the Shad0w's Bittorrent experimental S-5.8.7 core)

Windows XP Professional (SP1)

Asus A7N8X Deluxe (nForce 2)

AMD Athlon XP 2700+

512 MB PC2700 DDR-RAM (DDR333)

Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB)

Western Digital 80 GB 7,200 RPMS Special Edition (8 MB Cache) (x2)

Any ideas?

PS. It used to happen when I used to run Shad0w's Bittorrent (before I started to use ABC), so I assume it has something to do with the core (that Shad0w created).

try azureus client

it doesn't use shadow's core and it has option "slowly connect to new peers" to stop some routers from crashing..might fix your problem

or try offical client.

I uninstalled ABC and installed Azureus_2.0.6.0_setup.exe

When I click on a .torrent file, it downloads the link which should then open the client (Azureus in this case) but it doesn't. Nothing happens. So I went to C:\Program Files\Azureus and double-clicked on Azureus.exe but again, nothing opened/happened. Any ideas?

Yeah, if you've had problems with shadow's core in the past then I guess the only solution is to change clients.

But I have tried a different client lol. Azureus is even worse (i.e. it won't even load lol)

have you tried the default client? it's at version 3.3 at the moment.

I get really bad speeds with the default client, never above 20 KBs download, even though my connection is a 1MB cable connection (1024/256 : 128 KBs/32 KBs). Something to do with the light in the corner always being yellow, meaning the connection is having problems, probably due to the router. I get no problems (apart from the annoying freezing) with Shad0ws core

I managed to get Azureus v2.0.6.0 to work (by installing J2SE 1.4.2) but it started doing the freezing thing! Oh, and Eike's version of the BitTorrent Client can never connect to any tracker. Argh! Am I jinxed?

Sounds exactly like the problem I had, random freezing.

My Bit Torrent would D/L for a short bit then the entire PC would freeze, only a reboot would get me back up & running & this happened very frequently.

Do you have a NetGear FA311 Adapter, cause if so then that is exactly your problem (Well, it was mine).

The one that XP installs as default works fine with everything else but it was found that the driver had problems with Bit Torrent.

I currently use Driver FA311 v130, but I believe this was a Beta (Solved my problem anyway), Netgear have now updated their offical driver to version 1.8 (not tested by myself).

If you wish to try the Beta Driver (Released by Netgear) then give me a shout & I will send it over to you as it fixed my problem. :)

Yeah, that's my network card. God I love Neowin lol

Could you send me the working drivers please? Maybe PM me your MSN Messenger address or something?

I would advise you to try out the official released drivers from Netgear first.

The ones that I gave a link to.

If they don't fix your problem then Email me via this board an Email address where I could send the Beta drivers to as I do not use Messenger. :)

They appear to be working now, although ABC seems to take a lot longer to connect, and the download speeds seem lower too. Oh well

Its lower becasue you have firewall on, just open the ports that you use. ABC and Azureus are both fast and reliable BitTorrent Clients.

I don't know how. I don't use a software firewall, and I am using a SURFboard SB4100 cable modem with a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router with 4port 10/100 Switch router

    • Zen Browser 1.21b by Razvan Serea Zen Browser is a privacy-focused, open-source web browser built on Mozilla Firefox, offering users a secure and customizable browsing experience. It emphasizes privacy by blocking trackers, ads, and ensuring your data isn't collected. With Zen Mods, users can enhance their browser experience with various customization options, including features like split views and vertical tabs. The browser is designed for efficiency, providing fast browsing speeds and a lightweight interface. Zen Browser prioritizes user control over the browsing experience, offering a minimal yet powerful alternative to traditional web browsers while keeping your online activity private. Zen Browser’s DRM limitation Zen Browser currently lacks support for DRM-protected content, meaning streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are inaccessible. This is due to the absence of a Widevine license, which requires significant costs and is financially unfeasible for the developer. Additionally, applying for this license would require Zen to be part of a larger company, similar to Mozilla or Brave. Therefore, DRM-protected media won't be supported in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future. Zen Browser offers features that improve user experience, privacy, and customization: Privacy-Focused: Blocks trackers and minimizes data collection. Automatic Updates: Keeps the browser updated with security patches. Zen Mods: Customizable themes and layouts. Workspaces: Organize tabs into different workspaces. Compact Mode: Maximizes screen space by minimizing UI elements. Zen Glance: Quick website previews. Split Views: View multiple tabs in the same window. Sidebar: Access bookmarks and tools quickly. Vertical Tabs: Manage tabs vertically. Container Tabs: Separate browsing sessions. Fast Profile Switcher: Switch between profiles easily. Tab Folders: Organize tabs into folders. Customizable UI: Personalize browser interface. Security Features: Inherits Firefox’s robust security. Fast Performance: Lightweight and optimized for speed. Zen Mods Customization: Deep customization with mods. Quick Access: Easy access to favorite websites. Open Source: Built on Mozilla Firefox with community collaboration. Community-Driven: Active development and feedback from users. GitHub Repository: Contribute and review the source code. Zen Browser 1.21b changelog: New Features Updated to Firefox 151.0.4 Added 'Space Routing', a new feature that allows you to route links to a specific Space. • Windows Server gets DNS over HTTPS (DoH) support by Usama Jawad For the past few months, Microsoft has been previewing DNS over HTTPS (DoH) for Windows DNS Server, touting it as a foundational upgrade for zero-trust enterprise networks. It essentially introduces encrypted, authenticated DNS for the networks rather than transmitting DNS traffic in clear. Now, the company has introduced the general availability (GA) of this feature. The GA of DoH encourages organizations to deploy the solution in production environments without implementing a new client-to-resolver architecture. DoH helps improve the overall security of the network and reduces the risk of spoofing due to its zero-trust design. This is a significant change because pretty much every interaction with the network requires interfacing with DNS. DoH offers several advantages over standard DNS traffic, such as encryption using HTTPS, preventing unauthorized inspection, man-in-the-middle attacks, and traffic analysis. Since it leverages TLS certificates so that clients can verify the identity of the DNS server, it prevents spoofing through this authentication mechanism. Additionally, it's built on the DoH standard defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which means that it should work with modern RFC 8484-compliant clients. Finally, it integrates into the existing network architecture seamlessly and can even run in parallel with standard DNS, so that customers can migrate to the new technology at their own pace. Microsoft says that in the past few months of preview, DoH has become more stable, and customers can confidently deploy it in production environments with proper guidance. Microsoft has emphasized that migrating to DoH is necessary for organizations that are moving toward zero-trust DNS solutions. Windows clients already support DoH, but the latest availability on Windows Server provides encrypted DNS to all endpoints. The company has also mentioned that "while this release focuses on encrypting client-to-resolver communication, support for encrypted communication between Windows DNS Server and upstream DNS resolvers is planned for a future update." You can follow Microsoft's guidance to deploy DoH here, but keep in mind that you need a Windows Server 2025 installation with the latest Patch Tuesday updates installed.
