I'm considering buying the D-Link AC1200 router to replace an AirPort Extreme I've had now for at least 5-6 years. I just recently bought a Wi-Fi range extender to help boost the signal through so-called dead zones. What I want to know is if the AirPort Extreme can be turned into a second range extender to make the signal even stronger throughout the house? If it's not possible, guess I'll just have to sell the old AirPort router...

you do understand that every extender/repeater is /2 your bandwidth.. Why would any one want that?

If you need better coverage in dead areas - then put an AP there..  Yes any wifi router can be just used as Access Point to provide you coverage in dead areas.  Just run a wire to where you want it and set it up.  This is why actual AP are easier to deploy since they use POE and you can mount them correctly in the ceiling, etc. for best coverage.

I need the range more than I need the bandwidth.

Not how I would do it for sure..  But here
