Heatsink Needed?

Recommended Posts

I ask this of my old C2D E2140, Socket 775. Think that's the right one. Can overclock it 90% and it doesn't miss a beat.

Do I NEED a heatsink? I will be using it as my home NAS server, so I'm not using it for much.

I know these CPUs are super cool.

The LEAST I would do is get a passive cooler if needed. Case has 240mm on front, 240mm on top, and 120mm in back. So good airflow.

65W TDP, honestly I would not run it without at least a heatsink on it, you might run into stability issues. Get a CPU Cooler/Heatsink and just remove the fan. The case fans sound like they will pass enough air across the heatsink if they are setup in the proper direction.

Especially for a tower that is going to be a dedicated NAS, running all the time (I would assume). Slap on a quiet heatsink and be done with it.

yer any cpu should have a heatsink...,even if its a crappy oem or passive one, dissipation of heat, end of.

Good grief! A Core 2 CPU with ZERO heatsink? That doesn't need a millisecond of neuron computing applied to it.

If it doesn't shut down constantly, it would run in continuous throttle mode effectively simulating a 486 CPU.

I am compelled to call "TSK TSK" on all the unbelievably mild responses in this thread that would even hint at condoning cruel and unusual torture worse than waterboarding to one of our Digital Lifeform friends that among many other things, provide us with the internet, Neowin and this forum!

To be honest, I never know anymore seeing some of the threads that pop up, but I thought the same as you.

I just wondering "what" do get, as I don't have any heatsinks for Socket 755. Is it safe to have no heatsink.

Now I know what to know, thanks all.

silent runner.

What are you going for?  Why not just use the included CPU cooler or buy a quiet el cheapo heatsink w/ fan ... like an Arctic Freezer 7 or a Deepcool Gammex 400 (which can be had for about 15 bucks after rebate ~ Newegg )
