Configuring Wireless Internet.

Recommended Posts

Ok. I got my MN-700 router by Microsoft, and I got my MN-730 wireless PCI card. I have my PC hardwired to the router and my wife's PC has the PCI card. I got it so she can connect to the "Network", but it says it connects at 11mbps. How do I get that higher? Also, how do I configure the IP and all on her PC, I can't get the internet to work wirelessly. Do I use the LAN info that the router gives me?

Try to Upgrade the firmware...MS released a new firmware after the retail version was realised :)

Assuming that you are using DSL or Cable, you have to put all the info into the router so it automatically connects on demand to the net. The router will then DHCP using NAT (Network Address Translation) automatically to all the computers attached to it. (IE: It will fill the IP and DNS stuff for you). Make sure that 802.11g support is enabled in the options of the router as well

Hopefully your router has an admin "site" similar to what D-Link, Linksys and Netgear offer (not sure about MS) - just direct your browser to 192.168.0.1 (in most cases) and you can secure your WLAN...

You really need to do this so that you're not broadcasting your SSID or letting anyone just "borrow" your bandwidth. You can make wireless internet more secure than wired if you do it right!

Just check here if you're new to this type of thing: Maximum PC - Secure Wireless LAN

Good Luck!

The PCI computer should just be set to DHCP (Auto detect in IE) - you may have to reset the computer...

I hope you set up the DSL/Cable to go straight to the router, right? It'll auto-config...

EDIT - One thing I just thought of - if you set up "security" to include a WEP key - well you need to have written down the code and on the PCI machine (if it's XP) you have to go into the wireless network settings and configure it there - if you can't get into that then you may have to just create a new connection and set it up that way. If your current connection doesn't have the key put in (hex code, usually) then you'll never connect - you won't even be able to see your network!

The computer with the PCI card detects my wireless network, but when I try to connected, it doesn't do anything. I have 128 WEP on and have entered the correct key into the computer with the PCI card. I have any tried to connect with No security and I still can't do it. What do I need to do? Should I leave it on DHCP or enter an IP and such?

EDIT: I HAVE NO CLUE WHY THIS DOESN'T WORK!

I turned down the security to 64 WEP (10 digit key). I tried "aaaaaaaaaa" and "1111111111" as my keys just to make it easy. I went to the setup wizard in the microsoft software on the computer with the PCI card. It found my network and I entered the key in the space provided. I hit next and it says it is the wrong key. WHY WHY WHY???

before you start playing with security try getting the wireless to work first without it. Start simple then try something more advanced.

The first thing you need to do when installing a Base Station is to

1. Unplug Your cable or dsl modem.

2. unplug your Base Station

3. Connect the Ethernet Wiring from the Cable/DSL Modem to the Base Station "WAN" Port. It may be labeled Internet In or something.

4 wait 15secs.. then plug in your cable or dsl modem

5. Wait 10 secs for the Cable/DSL Modem to sync and then turn on your BASE STATION.

6. Next install the software for the Wireless PCI Card for the desktop this should be the "Microsoft Broadband Networking Utility" you should have gotten a CD in the box.

After installation of the software on BOTH Comptuers because you'll have this software for the BASE STATION and for the PCI Wireless Card.

This will install the drivers for the PCI Wireless Card and get it communicating with the BASE STATION. Once you've installed the software go to the machine where the base station is connected to and run the Update wizard and get the updated Firmware for your Base Station.

Start --> Programs "MIcrosoft Broadband Networking" ----> Help ---> Check for Updates Online.
