VMWare tools in Linux (Windows 7 host) won't properly install

Although I am running the current version (18.04) on Lubuntu, the host is Windows 7. 

 

When I start the vmware-config-tools.pl after the installation, several times I've received the message (process:3679): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_file_test: assertion 'filename != NULL' failed. In addition the GCC path seems to be invalid and even after installing the build-essential package the path to GCC is not found and I'm also not able to enter it manually.

 

I've tried out a bunch of suggestions I found via Google, and none have worked. I can find gcc with a simple locate command but it still complains. Ideas?

Had the same problem in Windows 10.  Give up on it, and put it in Parallels on my Mac. . .?

the normal VMWare Tool install process tends to have issues on most Linux Distros. To get around this most distros have the package in their Package Centers.

 

I'd recommend following one of these guides though, it's super easy still.

doing a bit of googling I came across this one | I guess there are some known issues with the VMWare Tools and Ubuntu/Lubuntu 18.04 right now. This work around should work for you though

I tried Parallels. Yuck. ? I'm so used to VMWare and VirtualBox that Parallels feels uncomfortable. But in this case, I'm on a Windows 7 PC at work, so Parallels is not an issue.
