how to delete .htaccess file on ftp server

I have some folders which contain only one .htaccess file in public_html folder and I can't delete them (using SmartFTP. it says folder isn't empty.) I tried to delete those folder using file manager in cpanel but it doesn't work either. What should I do now? :huh:

You may want to hold onto that file. Its kind of important.

you're not helping. i *wanna* delete the file! :/ it's not like the file is in my root folder. it's in the folder (public_html\<username>) I created and now wanna delete! And I'm sure it won't have any negative effect on the server at all :pinch:

try deleting the file first? instead of deleting the folder first, then see if you can delete the folder

Do what he said.

Then leave the file alone. If you can't delete it, it means its being used or you don't have permission.

Try a different FTP program. Probably won't help, but its worth a shot. Use FileZilla.

i have root access. and i've removed the redirection, subdomain... etc in cpanel already!

Well then thats just weird. I've never had that much trouble deleting a file before. Did you try another FTP client, just for a try?

How can you access cpanel if you don't have root. duh

LOL, easy! cpanel is just a control panel for the domain. You cannot just delete the htaccess file. You need to make sure EVERYTHING is turned off for that folder. If it still does not work, give your admin a call.

if your on a windowsxp machine,

GOTO

start > run > cmd

then hit enter

then type in "ftp SERVERADDRESS" (without quotes)

then hit enter

then type in username and password when prompted

then type "cd THEDIRECTORY" (without quotes)

then type "delete .htaccess" (without quotes)

and voila, your done.

yes but the file will still be present so he still wont be able to delete it.
