I can laugh no problem. I'm merely pointing out for the next time Budman says we're on page 10 ;)

And i do do, i just do it in my time ;) Like tonight, i could've tried out the firestick or ps4 with Plex once i'd gotten that email from Panasonic, or i could've dealt with the ongoing claim with the ombudsman which i needed to locate evidence for and also be careful in how i'm currently dealing with a court claim which needed an email drafting, redrafting & redrafting so as to not trip myself up, and in amongst that put the occasional reply here as a quick break from the need to think.

As it was i dealt with the important stuff. The hobby stuff will be done when i have what i see as being more time ;)

Oh he's been irritating at times but we all have that super-power at times as well!

And we have all been good at not listening to him as well.

It has taken a long bunch of back and forth the get to the point where the giant roadblock in what he wants to achieve is REALLY GOOD DVD UPSCALING which:

1. PLEX DOES NOT HAVE

2. KODI DOES NOT HAVE

3. UMS DOES NOT HAVE

4. MEDIA PORTAL DOES NOT HAVE

All upscaling really can do is smooth out pixelation to save you from seeing jagged pixel edges.

At best it is 480 p.  You aren’t getting 4K detail on that. 1080 smoothing can happen. Even 4K. But details aren’t going to be there you may also lose sharpness.

He he could use andvd hd to pull the decoded file structure off the disk.  That is as raw as you can get.  At that point handbrake can be used to put it in whatever format at whatever quality.

With everything that has been suggested so far, I can currently think of only 2 solutions that wouldn't have me wanting to tear my eyeballs out while watching a DVD

1. Buy a  PRO QUALITY BluRay box with a licensed DVD upscale chip.

uses a Sony chip: Sony UBPX1000ES 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Player - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-UBPX1000ES-Ultra-Blu-Ray-Player/dp/B06ZZMQVZD/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1543365390&sr=8-4&keywords=sony+x1000

- it's an Oppo: Oppo UDP-203 Region Free Ultra HD Audiophile Blu-ray Disc Player Can Play Any DVD Region from 0123456789 or Any Blu Ray Zone from A,B,C on Any TV. https://www.amazon.com/UDP-203-Region-Audiophile-Blu-ray-0123456789/dp/B01N24GN8B/

- uses Dolby Vision chip: LG 970 UHD - Dual HDMI - 2D/3D - Wi-Fi - 2K/4K - Region Free Blu Ray Disc DVD Player https://www.amazon.com/LG-970-UHD-100-240V-World-Wide/dp/B075VBXLLC/

2. Buy a PRO QUALITY TV with a licensed DVD upscale chip.

I gave up on examining TVs, here is an example of a "pro sumer" type of tv:

- Sony XBR-65Z9F 65" 4K Ultra HD Smart BRAVIA LED TV (2018) - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-XBR-65Z9F-BRAVIA-Speaker-Assistant/dp/B07K77Z4JX/

And keep his 500 DVD binder next to those devices.

1.B) BONUS FIND: (I think this has a good upscale chip but I can't confirm it, but it holds 400 Discs! but no 4K)

- Sony BDP-CX7000ES 400 Blu-ray Disc Mega Changer (Black) (2009 Model) - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-BDP-CX7000ES-Blu-ray-Changer-Black/dp/B002JIMRFC/

3. If someone can locate PRO QUALITY DVD upscale software then other options open up...

You haven't been looking at the material I have been posting!

Yes, there is smoothing (soften filter) but there is a TON of other processing that can be applied with really complex algorithms.

During that transitional time period when HD TVs cmae out everywhere but none of the cable channels and TV networkds had any HD content, a TON of research happened to upscale SD video to HD and TV networks installed and operated this equipment to cover the "gap" period.

From all that professional equipment, some of it ended up in high end BluRay Players and high end TVs

But almost none of it appears to have leaked into available software and of course there is no motivation any more for this to happen...

I don’t think all of that is needed. That is getting into the realm of wtf. I think PLEX will be fine once he gets a good copy and can play it.

I wish my kid didn’t give away my Blu-ray drive. I am intrigued in seeing a difference between dvd and bluray on PLEX within the same content.  I have plenty of movies that are dvd quality and some that are Blu-ray...I enjoy them both the same on my 55”, 43”, 22”, 9”, and 5” screens.  I have a 135” screen too but the projectors I have seen to have a screen door effect...hardly noticeable at 30+ feet away.

In general the OP has not been getting enough respect form all of us since in fact he has a really tricky problem by not moving on to HD content like everyone else

There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that PLEX has professional quality DVD upscaling out of the box, but maybe somewhere there is a plug-in for it, but good chance it would cost money to cover patent licenses (like Dolby Vision etc)

You are 100% correct that real world testing is desperately needed for anyone who is curious about this and possibly some of the findings might apply to HD to 4K upscaling but I think that has a different set of tech issues and is actually a lot easier

To test, we need your old Bluray Player, one of the high end players I listed, a Sony PS4, standard PLEX, and the Mythical Unicorn Software that I haven't located yet...

Anyone have all of these?

Also, from a PLEX point of view, if you make exact copies of the DVD and then stream MPEG VOB files, a good enough TV or "Roku type device with licensed upscale chip in it" (if such a thing exists) should be able to detect the input as a "DVD" and invoke it's internal sophisticated DVD upscale that just does not seem to exist in the PC software world...

IDEA: With a giant hard drive, lots of computer power and patience to get the settings just right it should be possible to upscale the DVD at time of RIP, apply a giant crapload of Video Post Processing and then encode the result as a "Pseudo BluRay" in x265

This bypasses the need for all that processing real-time on the play back device or the streaming device, BOTH of which after all of this many page thread we have FAILED to identify any PRO DVD upscale path.

People, stop complaining about the length of the thread. All of the quick and easy Band-Aid solutions just don't work when 100% of your source material is 500+ SD 24 fps interlaced jittery crap video you want to watch on HD or 4K without needing medical attention for your eyes!

A lot of my stuff is 720 or 1080.  Not much that is lower and recent.

Yeah that's everyone here except the OP. One day we will all move to 4K...

So we need to level-up our empathy circuits and imagine a kickass SD to FHD/4K best tech possible in 2018 and that turns out to be Deliciously Difficult if you want to nail it!

Let's take up the challenge! ... or not... maybe it seems too quixotic?

Ok someone flag me when you have actually LOOKED AT IT ON THE TV!!

I told you from also like the first page that DVD is 480p... You wanted to back that up - we have pages of talk of up scaling and have not taken the 15 minutes it would take to actually LOOK at it..

Arrrgghhh!!!

I have some stuff that is off dvd - quite a bit actually..  Its watchable.. Wife just watched holiday inn the other day getting into the xmas spirit and you could watch it... It wasn't freaking 4k HDR but JFC... Take the 15 minutes it would take to install plex and use your firestick!

How does it take 28 days to find 15 minutes to actually do it???

What about the part where he said he did that and it looked like crap compared to his PS4?

That's what got me wondering what sort of "secret sauce" the PS4 was using... and then discovering just how crazy the old DVD format actually was... Sony has a ton of their own proprietary upscaling technology which I suspect they added to the PS4 as another selling point...

Even if he vanished and never came back which as we all know happens from time to time, it's still a bit interesting to wonder what is available in 2018 to make DVDs upscale any amount better than "out of the box" viewers/players...

This upscaling - just a curiosity thing here so don't shoot me but is it more for me or yourself? Since i already said if upscaling involves a ton of work then i'm gone.

Anyway, just a quick update, and don't worry Budman you'll get updated when i've taken the 15 minutes. Check back at the weekend is probably your best bet.

I contacted Plex through twitter to ask about support for my TV. They were pretty vague.

So then i went on that market thing this morning on my TV. Nice to see how Panasonic know their own products...

If I knew what that App Store was called on page one, I would have directed you then.  I didn’t know until you posted pictures as there is no documentation that I found mentioning it.  Every smart device has an App Store not every manufacturer calls it the same thing.

Still, i would've expected Panasonic to be able to give me accurate information on their own product.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. It's done now. The good thing is i've got Plex on the TV. Friday/Saturday i'll take a look at hooking it up.

So, i know you're going to crucify me anyway but....

Stick the ripped movie on a USB stick and plug the USB stick in to my PC (leave PC turned on)

Fire up Plex on the TV, sign in and somehow point it at my USB stick. I assume it'll be easy enough to locate the USB stick, although how i don't know.

Then let Plex do its thing.

Something like that ^^?

Install PLEX server.  Walk through the wizard (this is where you can point to whatever storage you have, file share, usb, local folder, whatever) and then it does it’s thing to identify, put the box art/description/metadata on it (PLEX magic).   When that is done, you can play it on your computer through your browser or stream to any device on your network.  To stream off your network, you need plex pass.   It is a very simple install process.  Just take 5 seconds to glance at the options before committing to “next”.

If my technologically inclined boss could do it without help, you have a good chance of not messing it up.  If it takes you more than 5 min to download and setup there is something wrong.

    • Friday Windows 11 preview builds are here. Insiders in the Experimental (formerly Dev) and Beta Channel can download builds 26300.8697 and 26220.8690. My Windows11 device on the Preview Channel just got 26220.8728. My guess is this build is a nightly update from 26220.8690.
    • Traffic has a surprisingly unexpected impact on your surroundings by Sayan Sen Image by Radik 2707 via Pexels A collaborative study by researchers from several Israeli institutions found that everyday pollution from traffic and industrial activity measurably changed the atmospheric electric field over the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, providing new evidence of how human activity can influence the lower atmosphere. The research was led by Dr. Roy Yaniv of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Gertner Institute at Sheba Medical Center, Dr. Assaf Hochman of the Fredy & Nadine Herrmann Institute of Earth Sciences at the Hebrew University, and Prof. Yoav Yair of Reichman University. The study also involved Itay Froomer, a student from Hadera High School and the Israeli Museum of Medicine and Science (Technoda), who carried out the work as part of the Ministry of Education's 5-unit physics research track. The researchers focused on the atmospheric electric field under fair-weather conditions. Even in the absence of storms, a weak electric field naturally exists between Earth's surface and the atmosphere. One of the main ways scientists measure this field is through the Potential Gradient (PG), which is the inverse of the vertical component of the electric field. PG is a key part of the global electric circuit, a planet-wide system of electrical currents maintained by thunderstorms and electrified clouds around the world. Scientists have long known that the atmospheric electric field can be influenced by factors ranging from large-scale atmospheric processes to local weather conditions such as dust, fog and clouds. Human-made pollution is also known to play a role, but understanding exactly how urban emissions affect the electric field close to the ground has remained an area of ongoing research. To investigate this relationship, the team analyzed measurements from a newly installed electric field mill, an instrument used to continuously monitor the strength of the atmospheric electric field. The instrument was installed at the Center for Technological Education (Roter House) in Holon and became operational in August 2024. It was funded by Israel's Ministry of Education and the Holon municipality. The electric field mill forms part of a broader monitoring network that includes nearby meteorological stations and air-quality monitoring sites. This allowed researchers to compare electric field measurements with detailed weather data and pollution records to better understand what was driving changes in the Potential Gradient. The study focused on two major urban pollutants: fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), both commonly produced by vehicle traffic and industrial activity. PM2.5 refers to microscopic airborne particles small enough to remain suspended in the atmosphere for extended periods, while NOx is a group of gases released during fuel combustion. Researchers examined daily, weekly and seasonal patterns in the atmospheric electric field and compared them with changes in pollutant concentrations. Their analysis revealed a clear relationship between NOx levels and changes in the Potential Gradient, particularly during morning and evening rush hours when traffic emissions were at their highest. “What we observe is a direct physical link between emission peaks and electrical variability,” explained Dr. Roy Yaniv. “NOx reduces atmospheric conductivity very quickly, so the electric field responds almost instantaneously during traffic rush hours.” Atmospheric conductivity describes how easily electrical charges move through the air. According to the researchers, nitrogen oxides rapidly alter this conductivity, causing a near-immediate response in the electric field. PM2.5, however, was associated with a delayed response. The researchers attributed this difference to the particles' longer atmospheric residence time, meaning they remain in the atmosphere for longer periods, as well as their different microphysical interactions with surrounding air and atmospheric components. The study also identified a pronounced "weekend effect." In Israel, traffic volumes and some industrial activity decline significantly on Fridays and Saturdays. During these periods, concentrations of both NOx and PM2.5 dropped, and corresponding changes were observed in the atmospheric electric field. “The weekend signal demonstrates just how sensitive the electric field is to changes in human activity,” the researchers noted. “When emissions decline, the electrical environment adjusts at once, providing a high-resolution indicator of urban atmospheric conditions.” The findings showed that pollution levels can influence not only the chemical composition of the atmosphere but also its electrical properties. Researchers said the results strengthened the case for using atmospheric electricity as an additional tool for environmental monitoring, particularly in densely populated urban areas where anthropogenic, or human-caused, influences are most pronounced. The study also pointed to potential public health applications. By combining air-quality measurements with observations of atmospheric electricity, researchers said they could gain a more complete picture of how urban atmospheric conditions change over time. “Integrating air-quality data with electric-field measurements gives us a clearer picture of how the lower atmosphere evolves moment by moment,” the researchers added. “It’s a framework that can support both scientific insight and practical environmental decision-making.” Beyond the scientific findings, the project highlighted a collaboration between universities, public institutions and secondary education. Researchers said the work demonstrated how students could take part in real-world environmental research while contributing to studies of air quality, atmospheric processes and their potential effects on society. A lot can happen in the world between now and the 2026 World Series, including the 2026 FIFA Cup. Tell me about it again after the FIFA Cup is concluded. That should allow plenty of time to prepare for it.
