Backing up DVD / blu ray & CD collection?

Ah so i'm to uncheck the forced then? I thought forcing was where you basically force them in to the video - as in make sure they're in there.

And i'm aware the default is .mp4. I actually caught somewhere, maybe even this thread, about mp4 & subtitles but anyway - i make sure it states .mkv.

Going to send you a short PM also.

forcing it will burn the subs into the video itself so they won't be togglebleable. (This is the only way to include internal subs on MP4.) if you want toggleable subs on MP4 then they have to be external.

MKV you can set to include the sub without force and it will be internal and toggleable.

I've used handbreak to rip my anime dvds and keep the subs toggleable; it's pretty easy to work with once you learn your way around. the nice thing is most settings can stay at their default in handbreak :)

I mostly just change it to MKV default and go from there

Well i'm getting closer (or maybe not).

I included the subs and unchecked "Forced Only", checked "Burn In" and "Default" was then unchecked. It seems you can have Burn in or Default checked but not both at the same time.

Anyway so i used the original video file as created by MakeMKV and it did put the subs in the newly shrunk file ..... except they weren't toggleable which is just as useful to me as having no subs.

Need to be able to have them on as an option.

SMH ... i didn't realise the importance of having foreign audio scan in 1st slot and English subs in 2nd slot.

Foreign audio needs to be "forced only" and "burn in"

where English subs need to be "default"

I can then toggle the subs.

I thought i could just select English and leave it at that (so 1 line). All's well that ends well i guess :) lol.

oh yeah that's something a lot of people forget; I've forgotten that a few times myself and had to go back and encode again

I'm just glad i've got there in the end with it :)

I know i may not be the quickest learner but i'll persevere as best i can. It may sound a bit sad but when you (I) get over each hurdle it's like a sense of achievement that makes it feel worthwhile. Still, i'm not put off by all this yet.

Now it's just a case of learning a bit about Handbrake and the different settings and seeing what works for me. What i want is to be able to shrink the files without loss (obviously) or at least without noticeable loss. Perhaps a machine could tell the difference but the human eye? And also to be able to 'futureproof' as best i can - so for example, i may not have 5.1 surround sound right now and i may have no plans to have this in the future but who knows. So i'd rather have it all set up to be ready for changes in the future than in 10 years time i find my setup has changed and i suddenly have 200+ movies that i'll end up wanting to tinker with.

The one thing i'm not really too happy with is MakeMKV. At the moment i'm only really ripping blu-rays. When i pop one in and go to rip, some movies can have like 5 English audio's & a stack of subs.  I don't mean 5.1 audio, 7.1 audio etc. Of course they'll be there but as you scroll down and start deleting all the foreign languages there'll be more English ones in that list and i don't know what they are (so i just include them all).

At the end of the day i just want one set of subs and then a reasonable set of audio but as there can be multiple subtitle listings in English, i just have to select them all to play safe.

What are you encoding too? mkv, mp4 - handbrake defaults to mp4 what format are the subs, etc.. Read the Docs!!

So if mp4

"You can not pass-through PGS into MP4 as this file format does not support it."

If your doing mkv then you can have multiple passthru soft coded, etc..

You will prob never want forced unless your doing foreign lang scans.. You can passthru multiple lang or SDH, etc.  You will have to experiment.. Prob want to do it on cut up sections of your media so your not wasting 5 hours trying something out ;)

You will have to look at the tracks to what they are - some are prob commentary, etc..  Disks normally come with a lot of extra nonsense that really who cares about ;) hehehe  I have never in my life ever listened to commentary track..  Nor can I for the life of me think of anything that would prompt me to do so...  Even with like my fav all time movie Casablanca -- While I would be happy to read information on how made, details about production of specific scenes, and I have done that, etc..  I would never ever listen to someone talk over the dialog, giving tidbits of info.

Do you guys have a workaround for movies where the dialogue and 'music' are at two different volumes?

I'm not trying to say this is anything with handbrake or makemkv but since we're talking about movies i wondered if anyone had a workaround.

I'm considering buying a soundbar. I don't know if that will be a solution to this (i'm not buying it for this reason) or whether the issue will still persist. Basically i've just watched Batman Begins which is over 2hrs long and i've had to spend the entire time with the remote in my hand changing the volume. When they were talking i had to have the volume up pretty damn loud. Then there'd be an action scene and i'd have to shoot the volume down low. This has easily been the worst movie i've watched for a while that's been like this.

Generally this happens when the audio track is DD 5.1 and you are playing it on a device that doesnt have 5.1. I know on my friend Sony Bravia he can go into audio settings and force it to stereo, maybe that will work for you.

If your pulling over all the audio tracks - just play the stereo one ;)  Didn't already go over this..

If your source does not have stereo, or dd 2.0 etc.. Then down convert it, with boost/normalization..  Read about best way to boost dialog when doing that.  You could extract the 6 channels and then remix them yourself, etc heheheh

That is a whole nother rabbit hole ;) hehehehehehe

Yeah the simple solution is to up your sound system - hehehehe

Here too lazy to go grab a blue ray out of the storage cab..  So just found an image via google

sterotrack.thumb.png.b0252f39916cb2c05d4a85f774ef73db.png

When your pulling over your movies - make sure you include the stereo if there.. And keep in mind that there will be multiple tracks in your file for any nested lossy tracks - like you see the trueHD 5.1, and then the sub track listed as DD 5.1  Once you pull all the tracks you can see what they are in say mkvtoolnix.. And then just pull them out if for the ones you dont want/need like commentary.

Did you want the blue or red pill ;)  If your blue sort of guy you prob go back to just shoving your media in a player ;)

edit:  Also you noticed the "forced" only subs.. Those are the ones for foreign lang only parts...

Danke :)

So i set Handbrake up at about 10:30pm last night to encode Batman Begins. I selected this movie as a) we'd just watched it and b) every time i enabled subs the movie would skitz out and not want to play ball, so i was curious how a dumbed down version would perform.

10:00am this morning we were done. 🤣

Just been to play the original again in Plex in comparison to the newly encoded version, as i've already experienced how a movie can perform differently on different days.

Sure enough, selected the subs and the original played just fine. No issues at all. Ok i only played about a minute but i couldn't even do 5 seconds last night.

Selected the newly encoded version ... started flipping out just like last night. On the plus side i saw no real problems in image quality so encoding is likely the way to go for me, at least with some movies.

Its possible you were direct... When you do subs, it has to transcode!!  Did you figure out why your "prem" version not showing you the prem details for what your client is playing... You can also see the details on your client.. Just click the little looks like a equalizer icon, etc.  On your player.

If I get a chance throw up a picture from my phone later.. so can see like what the interface looks like say my roku stick.

edit:  Ok so playing back the movie without any subs selected I get direct play.. no transcoding having to be done at all

I then change to subs, and you can see subs are now displayed... But now transcoding is happening..

burnsubs.thumb.jpg.7c4461c35aa842affc73332f769a8dcd.jpg

Here is how it looks when doing subs via the dashboard, when prem is features are enabled.

howitlooksdashboard.thumb.png.d49fc7fd5cf308f60ed8c489fe150a98.png

Ah maybe that is why i was never direct play - i generally watch with subs because i'm deaf :D

No i never did figure it out tbh because i tried again and it reappeared. It seems to come and go which i guess shouldn't happen but it does.

Out of curiosity do you store your video files and audio files on different hard drives or do you just lump them all together? I guess it's all personal preference. I was thinking of keeping them separate for no other reason than i like organisation. I'll know more of what i'm dealing with when i near the end of my video ripping (as i've not even started my music collection yet) but for now i'm just in the process of collecting movies that i want to have in blu-ray quality rather than just DVD quality.

My audio is just different folder on the same array on nas.

media.thumb.png.08ad9e49ea80e3fb48d67f0fd769e213.png

And then yeah different lib setup in plex with different path, etc.  Not good idea to lump all media together for plex.

I take it if your deaf ;)  There isn't going to be much of "music" collection ;) heheeh sorry couldn't help myself..

If you want to get direct play with subs, you would have to pre burn them into the movie.. That is the burn in option in handbrake.

BTW - your NEVER done with such a project.. Like said its a huge time suck... This rainy afternoon, I going through my Dick's Picks Albums and editing the Summary info about the Album.

Just pulling the info from wikipedia - but nice to see some details of such albums..

You guys ever ran in to this issue with MakeMKV?

raid2_corrupt.thumb.jpg.2a44408b2ef160f16dce514534f27b55.jpg

Not sure if that's an issue with the disc itself, MakeMKV, my blu-ray drive or what.

I don't have the time to stick the disc in a 'traditional' blu ray player and watch the movie from start to finish to see if it glitches anywhere along the line.

If you click it though it's the same error message repeated, so i guess every so often it throws up another line as it keeps trying (and failing) for the work around that it mentions. I just left it running while i ate dinner and washed the dishes and it still hasn't finished.

I did some Googling and one result i found was a 'dirty disc'.

So i took some spray to it and gave it a wipe off with some disc cleaner equipment i have. This has worked on uncooperative discs in the past. Not this time. Although it did throw up a new error afterwards...

raid2_nowork.thumb.jpg.e85a44338adc24492fee9c214ad4b780.jpg

Doesn't look like it wants to play with this disc.
