Exclusive: What to Expect From Sony's Next-Gen PlayStation

PlayStation’s next-generation console ticks all those boxes, starting with an AMD chip at the heart of the device. (Warning: some alphabet soup follows.) The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments.

I guess it's the excitement for the potential of what the better hardware can bring.

I'm hoping the rumored BC are a) true and b) can apply to a disc you put in and NOT the option to re-buy my library again.

Both this and Xbox Next are bound to hit a brick wall called Stadia if Stadia turns out to be everything what was promised.

You know, just for fun, we could mention that xCloud was announced before Stadia.  Can't say which will release first but I wouldn't be surprised if it was MS.

 

(And Sony has been streaming games for years, though not quite the same deal.)

And you forget the proportion of the population in the world that doesn't have access to the infrastructure that's needed

I may be mistaking but xCloud still requires ownership of the Xbox One and same goes for Sony's streaming solution.

Of course I did no forget it, the numbers for console ownership will not disappear but will diminish. Deployment of Stadia will certainly continue after the first several markets, and if successful You can bet Google will do everything they can to speed it up. Considering Stadia will be released ~1 full year ahead of PS Next gives Stadia more breathing room. Sony's exclusives, though  could become PS5's saving card.

It's hard to say how good or feature filled the first release will be from any of them, really.  I obviously trust MS, but that doesn't mean it'll instantly be all that.  Google does good work too, but tends to have a rough product until they get some updates on in markets they enter.

At this point, the hardware for the next gen systems shouldn't be a surprise at all.  New AMD zen2 based cpu, new amd navi gpu.  Both things everyone expected from the start.  The only difference here is how scaled back from the full desktop versions are the two going to be so they can fit into the tighter power and heat requirements of a console.

Depends on where you live, big city with affordable fast internet, possibly.

Rural area with Satellite, a "traditional" game console will be a better fit.

It's certainly that it's likely going to be usable for a large number of people that's making this happen now.

 

Obviously it's not meant for everyone, and that's why I really doubt the fancy boxes are going away anytime soon.  (Sales might've peaked though, if a lot of people just won't need them anymore.)
