Why Does Internet Temporary Files Location Go Missing So much in Windows 10 Pro x64

Recommended Posts

Symptoms some programs wouldn't open,  like Spotify app,  couldn't download nothing with Edge,    repaired that issue without a clean install this time,  but last time I had the issue couldn't repair,  so opted for clean install then.      Using Avast Free Antivirus 19.6 version,  that shouldn't be the problem I don't think as other PC's use same version that just released and all is well

When this issue happens can't download anything and such

Any info on why it happens or how to prevent in the future will be greatly appreicated

did you move it from its default location - looking at mine its going to be in appdata folder under your profile.

C:\Users\budman\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache

Your antivirus for sure could be messing with that location for "security" reasons would be my guess if your having issues.

I didn't move it, it should've been at Default,  I managed to fix it hopefully for good,  followed article online to temp move to another location,  then edit 2 parts of registry, restart, and so far back to default,  but will it stay at Default,  not sure at this point

I guess i'll find out in the coming days

Just want it to work properly, stay at Default, and if I find out Avast is messing with folders it shouldn't,  then out it goes from all the Windows 10 Systems,  I've had this issue happen at least 5-6 times over the course of the year,  never really figured out why for sure,   (even did a clean install of entire system on the 18th)    Thinks should leave probably Avast alone, but I've used Avast free since 2006, so I stupidly reinstall it each time I do a clean install--i'm so dumb at times

For the Record also did happen before on the Laptop

Not Sure on System 3, I don't think it did as yet, but not sure

have never seen the problem... Then I don't use that av either.. To be honest the default av that comes with windows is enough for my use case..

Yeah and who knows default av might be enough for me,  if I could just leave Avast alone lol--maybe i'd have no issues lol.      well 19.6 suppose to uninstall cleaner if I should decide to according to there changelog on the release this morning

I used to love Avast but in the past 3 or 4 years they've really gone down hill.

Now a days I just use the builtin Windows Defender on my PC as well and have never run into this issue so I could easily see Avast causing it

Yeah It may be causing it, can't tell for 100 percent sure LOL, but that is only thing updated this morning, besides standard Windows 10 Store apps, otherwise haven't really installed anything else at all since clean install, a few games, and scanned everything first before restoring, all was clean lol

(off topic) I started using ESET (for some specific reasons) and it catches so many more untrusted sites and programs communicating, even more than other AVs. Used to use Avast and ESET is more efficient and effective.

Have you tried sfc/scannow? Run it from an elevated command prompt, and see.

I have run sfc /scannow from elevated command prompt, and restarted, and it was still missing eariler

Eventually found article online, and did the steps it said,   then another restart, and was back to default

Now I hope it stays at Default,  don't really wanna have to be fixing all the time, or doing clean installs or restores of system image each time problem happens

I am facing the similar issues. Can you share the link of the article you followed to get rid of this issue? It'd be really helpful if you do so.

Well turns out the article didn't fully solve it,    Have 1 account with the Internet Temporary files location still blank,   Standard user account it's fixed it appears hopefully for good,  but I will share the article in hopes it would help someone else

Just hope article doesn't cause you anymore problems or anyone else

May just opt for a  newer SSD, and just replace it with a Samsung Serial ata 250gb SSD, and do another clean install and be done with this problem once and for all, then be really careful what I install/uninstall,    As so sick of this problem here apps won't work right,  can't download with Edge on Admin account now,  so frustrated beyond belief, heck I already did 1  clean install, thought would fix it for good

Makes sense. HKCU is for current user only. Check if there is an alternate machine key, else you will have to repeat it for each account as you are logged into it.

Used to be what I installed on people's computer's for them also, but totally bloated and not nearly as good as it used to be.

For the short time I had Windows 10, the default AV seemed quite sufficient and light.

Try this, open windows explorer and type in %temp% then press enter.  Select everything in there and click delete.  If you have open files, click skip.

Will try that suggestion,  hopefully will solve the issue, and all set.     Heck I even did a whole system clean install on 6/18,  and just can't believe problem came back already.    Guess should've never reinstalled Avast,  did uninstall it this morning--so far fixed it seems the user account,  still working on the Admin account.

Half tempted when I goto Office depot soon to get Printer ink,  just buying a new SSD, and installing that, doing another clean install,  then getting drivers in, then macrium reflect free system imaging tool, and making image when hardly nothing installed, and hopefully runs fine after that

Current Western Digital Blue 250gb SSD, is a bit old bought originally in 2016 for my older AMD FX system, transferred to my newer Intel System in 2017,  works pretty well, despite I've had this current problem off and on for a while now, comes and goes sadly

Avast staying out though that's for sure,  as shouldn't even happened this issue after a brand new clean install

Edit Possibly Fixed, can't say for sure yet: Ok For Moment Both accounts Internet Options/Temporary internet Files location is showing properly,  will it stay proper totally unsure as yet...but I so hope tired of trouble shooting and crap

    • If they don't sell enough of the 1st gen then there won't be a 2nd gen
    • Epic fail, should've added an eSata port on the back, also if the memory/NVME are soldered then they're hardly gonna sell any, first thing most people do with their Steamdeck is, or used to be, replacing the NVME with a 2TB one.
