So I've got a big little family of lots of devices that connect to our home network, laptops, phones, tables, tvs and game consoles. I want to name them so it's easier to manage and know right away what/who is connecting. I was going to name them "kids name"-laptop "kids name"-phone. But was wondering if I should worry, security wise, if I did that? I mean I could come up with code names instead like "twofingers"-laptop. But simple would be best for me. So what do you think? Thanks!

I always do <name>-desktop. Or <name>-<distro>

I don't really see it as a security problem, it's just a name, like your wireless SSID...

Be like Debian, go by Toy Story character names, or Star Wars characters, or Avenger characters...

p0rn star names is another naming scheme ;)  But prob not appropriate for home use with kids hehehe

I have used whisky names in the past, Belgium beer makers, etc. All kinds of naming schemes you can use.. Greek or Norse gods,  But yeah name - what is it is shouldn't be a "security" issue.. My wifes phone on the network is Kim's Iphone ;) and her laptop is called Kim's laptop..

Depending on how geeky you are.. Star trek Ship classes or planet from the series.  Really want to geek out use quark flavors, bosons, etc. There are lots of things to choose from.. Just need something that has X number of names, where your network of devices has less than that and won't be growing larger than that.  You can also mix and match.. phones could all use whisky names, camera's could be greek gods, etc..  Have fun with it!

My scheme is "shared infrastructure" is named after cities of the world (Zurich, Rome, Tokyo, Lyon, etc) and personal devices is <owner>-<device-type> so fahim-iphone.

For work PCs I use 3 digits to identify the department, followed by a hyphen then initials, date installed and P for PC or L for laptop. Servers are what ever theme I choose, used planets, LotR names, and others. Home, its just what ever I think of.

I actually never thought of that... 🤣

My home network is based off of the Xmen, the only devices that use the users first name are our phones.  (Quite literally my network name is Xmen lol).

lets see, Gambit, Rouge, Wolverine, Havok, Iceman... etc... lots to choose from.

As long as you can identify easily who owns what device either by your own naming convention cross reference or by naming it something familiar to you in the name, it really doesn't matter....

If you named a device whiskey-tango and know that it is charlie's iphone, I don't think it would matter all too much.

Hello,

Some interesting discussions about naming schema:

Perhaps one (or more) of these will be helpful to you in selecting a standard.

I work with tech for a living and also have a bunch in my house. I name my work stuff after planets, galaxies, nebulas, and other things in space. For my personal stuff.. I'm a huge Zelda fan so naming follows that. I find if you name them in a scheme related to something you are very into it is easy to remember what is what. I can remember every devices name but this may just be how my brain works and may not be the right fit for everyone.

    • PowerToys Run has already been replaced with Command Palette. Run is still functional, but it's just a matter of time before Microsoft disables it. Raycast can do much more though, and with its plugins much, much, much more...

    • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat now rolling out to Government Community Cloud (GCC) tenants by Paul Hill Microsoft has announced that Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is now rolling out to Government Community Cloud (GCC) tenants. This will allow affected users to experience AI-powered chat experience in Microsoft 365 apps, while meeting US government cloud requirements. Admins will also get the tools they need to manage access, security, and compliance at scale. Since June, Microsoft has also been rolling out Web Chat access for Copilot users since early June and that’s expected to be completed by the end of the month. The rollout announced today will also bring Copilot Chat to Microsoft 365 Copilot app (web), Outlook (web and desktop), and Microsoft Teams (web and desktop). The Redmond giant said that these features are included at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 and Office 365 licenses (F1, F3, G3, and G5). It also pointed out that this rollout doesn’t include AI Agent functionality; that rollout will be announced in the future. If you have used artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT or Google Gemini, you’ll have probably noticed that it scours the web for up-to-date information. By default, this “web grounding” is off in GCC with Copilot Chat. If administrators want to allow it, they can explicitly enable the “Allow web search in Copilot” Cloud Policy - the exception is if the policy was already enabled in your environment, in that case your existing configuration will be followed. Microsoft says admins will also have granular controls over the AI in Microsoft 365 Copilot app, Outlook, Teams, and Web. If you’re an administrator of a GCC environment, you can check out the How to prepare section of the announcement to learn about reviewing your admin settings, educating users about how to use the AI, and monitoring the rollout. The usage of AI in government holds significant potential as shown by a recent study by the UK government. It found that AI helped to save civil servants 2 weeks, per person, per year. This time can be spent by them doing other productive activities, making government more efficient overall. With Microsoft's rollout of Copilot Chat to GCC, US government workers can be more efficient too.
    • I think that if the ad came from the AppleTV+ app, people wouldn't have been this bothered. But from the wallet app, i understand why this is frustrating. It's not anything new from Google and Microsoft, so maybe the Wallet App said to themselves, let's try it to test the water from iPhone users. Well, i hope they won't do it again. I went to see the movie yesterday in theater (in France), i hope there is a way to tell the Apple TV app to stop showing me ads for this movie now. I won't be going to see it again (maybe i'll rewatch it in a few months / years, it was nice).
