I would not suggest any of those soho routers, even if they support 3rd party to be honest... Get a real router, and then AP.. Yeah its even more separation.

Something like the sg1100 would be an entry level router.. $179 (price went up)

https://www.netgate.com/solutions/pfsense/sg-1100.html

Then a real AP, say uap-ac-lite or pro 80$ for the lite.

Then switch that can do vlans, say $40...

Now your talking $300...   But there would be pretty much nothing you couldn't do.

^ He speaks the truth... It may sound like a heap of money, but you'd be better off.

yeah it'll require a bit more manual setup, but once done budman is right that kind of setup will work like a dream and give you WAY more flexibility and features compared to a general consumer router

Its not a heap of money if you want to actually run a real network ;)

###### I have seen soho wifi routers close to that.

here this freaking monstrosity is on sale and its 269$ Can't even do vlans - wtf???

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-AX6000-8-Stream-Smart-Router/dp/B07L56SN8M?ref_=Oct_DotdC_954t_0_26b8b46b&pf_rd_p=7016b266-f2ff-5445-b1bf-012925862333&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-4&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=300189&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=KMT4P2VY38XFW8SY2BPD&pf_rd_r=KMT4P2VY38XFW8SY2BPD&pf_rd_p=7016b266-f2ff-5445-b1bf-012925862333

Says list is $349

And now that your broken up your gear, you can piece meal expand and upgrade.. Want a better switch - just get a better switch.. You need wifi in another area - just buy another AP..

My current network gear is this

Modem - $79 (pays for itself already, since isp wanted $10 a month)

SG4860 - $750 router

SG300-28 $200 (2017) switch

SG300-10 $190 (2014) switch

UAP-AC-Pro  $130

UAP-AC-LR  $110

UAP-AC-Lite $90

This is the "network" gear, does not count upses, or nas and other devices..   Does not count switches on my self, or usgp3 on shelf, etc.

But I got the Lite and LR free, for being part of beta program on unifi, and good poster and supporter of other members..

Wasn't really in the market when I got the 28 port switch, but price was so good couldn't pass it up.. And now its ports are pretty close to full.  And prob would of went with the sg3100, but wasn't in stock when needed it.. And hey go big or go home ;)

But sure you could do it "cheaper" for sure.. Any $20 wifi router that can run 3rd party firmware could be used and prob will support vlans under 3rd party firmware be used as AP.. The switches that can do vlans can be had cheap $40 8 port gig.. And pfsense you could run any really any old hardware you have laying around...

Well, for somebody new to all this would call it expensive. But once they know how to set up everything, it is known as an investment.

I don't have the big boys like you, but I do have adequate hardware/software that works for me. :)

Yeah wouldn't expect anyone to jump on such hardware out of the gate.. Build up to it, but his is why you don't try and put everything in 1 box ;)

Ooooh, curve ball!

I'll need to ponder this for a bit. The gear will be sitting in my living room, so I'll still need consider that factor too.

So let me make sure I follow you. Presume I still need a modem up front too, say that netgear DM200, which would connect to the Sg1100, then the uap-ac-lite connects into the the Sg1100. All local to each other?  Where and why does the cheap vlan switch come into it? I have a couple of netgear gs108uk at my disposal of that works?

Well the sg1100 is limited on interfaces.. If you don't need wired connections that share same vlan as wireless - then you could skip on the vlan switch.  Connect your AP to port on sg1100 and do different wifi vlans. And then dumb switch could be on other port on router.. But you wouldn't be able to have wired and wireless on the same vlan without bridging in the router - which not good idea.

You could put in cabinet to hide the modem, router and switch - but your AP should really be mounted where it can best cover the space you want covered.

Those switches are dumb.. Can not do vlans.. Which you could get away as long as you don't want to put wired devices on multiple networks.

    • Windows 11 blocks Google Chrome due to a Microsoft safety feature, fix out by Sayan Sen Microsoft has a parental control and safety feature called "Microsoft Family Safety" which allows users to create safe spaces for their family members for browsing the web by setting up filters so as to block and filter inappropriate content and limit browsing to kid-friendly and family friendly content. However, as it turns out, following Chrome version updates 137.0.7151.68, 137.0.7151.69, Google's web browser is getting automatically blocked by Microsoft Family Safety as affected users have reported that the browser will automatically close or crash and then fail to reopen. Thus if you are using Edge, you get the green signal from the Family Safety app, but not if you are using Google Chrome. The issue seems to be affecting mainly Windows 11 devices but Windows 10 or macOS may be affected too. A thread on Microsoft's official Windows forum by Peter Priestley1, which is presumably from an educational institute, says: The thread has been upvoted by 122 people at the time of writing. There are plenty of other such threads online and users also say that they have tried all sorts of things like refreshing cookies and appdata but "nothing" seems to fix it. This shows that Microsoft's safety feature is certainly robust and that it is not easy to bypass but it also means affected users are not too happy about it considering it is seemingly blocking all versions of Chrome. There is one fix that worked though, renaming chrome.exe to something else like chrome1.exe for example. A Chrome community manager, Ellen T, has confirmed that the Microsoft feature is indeed what is causing it and the only way to fix the issue is to "unblock Chrome" inside the Family Safety app. Ellen says: Microsoft has also shared a similar guidance on the issue according to Fred SR., a senior member of the Chrome community.
    • Typical Microsoft... Go half way and then lazily stop. As if adding all the other directional options would have been so difficult...
    • Some of these robots are getting pretty human-like, but obviously stronger and more bendy. Weight and balance is probably a big hurdle because of all the batteries they have to pack in them, but it'll continue to improve. I'm guessing these companies foresee a future where every household has a robot slave...I mean, assistant.
